We firmly believe that the Legislature should continue its part time status with commensurate pay. This would ensure the widest possible range of membership, while remaining in close contact with the people they represent. We also believe that the legislature must effectively streamline its own internal operations to enable its members to cope with the enormous volume of bills introduced each session. The Legislature must reassess itself, regain it's proper and constitutional prerogative as the people's representative in establishing state policies, overseeing state agencies, and restrain itself from allowing "all nighters" at the end of session to pass bills that have not been given proper deliberation. To this end the Conservative Party proposes: 1. Support of a Constitutional Amendment mandating that if a budget is not adopted by the 31st of March, the prior year's budget shall be enacted. 2. Support of a Constitutional Amendment establishing state procedures for initiative (direct proposal of amendments and laws by the electorate) and referendum (permissive voter approval or rejection of new laws or administrative regulations) and recall.

  • An end to waiting lists
The Conservative proposal involves using the private sector to cut waiting lists. Patients will have access to treatment at any independent hospital which can perform their operation for NHS prices. If an independent hospital charges more than the NHS tariff then the NHS will contribute 50% of the cost.
    Choice
Patients will have a choice of treatment at any hospital (NHS or independent) and will have information on infection rates and waiting times to inform this choice.
    Choosing not waiting
Under Labour by the end of 2008 patients will be able to choose any hospital that can provide treatment at NHS standards. Entrepreneurial GPs and other providers will be encouraged into areas where services are limited. By 2009 every woman will have the choice over where and how they have their baby and what pain relief they have. Investment in palliative care services will double to increase choice for cancer patients. Access to information and advice will be improved through NHS Direct, Health Direct and interactive TV. There will also be a fundamental review of NHS dentistry.

Stick Around for Organized Labeling of Political Issues
AgeVenture News Service August 11, 2004
Just in time for the political mudslinging that traditionally accompanies presidential elections, a national survey has uncovered some surprising facts about the way voters “label” their own politics - as well as the views of their political rivals.
The new study, commissioned by DYMO, the leading producer of labelmakers for the home and office, polled Democrats, Independents and Republicans across the country and examined the many labels associated with political affiliation.
Here's how the DYMO survey helped organize our, otherwise complicated, political landscape.
  • The People Behind The Labels
Three-quarters of Americans reveal that they are a member of a traditional political party - registered as either Democrats or Republicans. Surprisingly, upwards of twenty-five percent of registered voters label themselves as Independent.
  • Independent voters
are almost evenly divided along gender lines, but the traditional parties aren’t nearly as uniform - while Republicans are more likely to be male, 2 in 3 Democrats are women. In terms of age, Republicans average three to four years older than their Democratic and Independent counterparts (50, as opposed to 47 and 46, respectively).
  • Labels We Love
Democrats overwhelmingly see themselves as “idealistic” and “patriotic” - nearly 80 percent choose these descriptors to define their point of view. In describing their political nemesis, 2 in 5 Democrats are quick to label Republicans as “pro-military.” Their view of Independents? While 40 percent of Democrats feel that Independents are “unpredictable,” many apparently don ’t know what to make of the party - 39 percent claim not to have any opinion of Independent voters.

Senate
The members of the Senate are appointed, nominally by the governor-general but in effect by the prime minister. Once appointed, a senator may stay in office until age 75. Appointment to the Senate is considered an honor and is frequently granted for political service in the national or provincial government. To be appointed, a senator must own a certain amount of property, be over the age of 30, and reside in the province he or she represents. Senators are appointed on the principle of regional representation. There is a total of 105, but four more or eight more can be added under exceptional circumstances as long as they are drawn equally from Qu©bec, Ontario, the Maritimes, and the western provinces.

With less than a month to go until the General Election, here in the UK you can't seem to get away from inanely grinning politicos squeezing palms and kissing babies for the cameras. Hell, if Alex was still of a kissable age, I'd be locking him in the house until May 6th! (Ed says: Enough of politics Malarkey, this blog is about design!
OK, let's talk about design
Without dwelling on political agendas, negative campaigning or the relentless sniping at the opposition (Ed says: I've warned you once!), I have so far been dictinctly underwhelmed by the design quality of the party's campaign materials. Now I usually refrain from commenting on other designers' work (unless I'm awarding a Web Standards Awards star) but in this case I thought I'd cast a critical eye on the visual design of a few UK political party web sites. I started by getting a bunch of links from the BBC election site Party web sites montage: JPG (410Kb) It's clear from the montage that as expected the main parties have poured more resources into their campaign sites and the results are infinately slicker than minority parties with lesser access to donor millions. The three main national party sites (

web posted May 17, 2004 Not everyone is happy with the recent merger of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance. In a recent attempt to salvage the old Progressive Conservative party from the merger, some of its former members banded together to found the Progressive Canadian Party. ESR correspondent Pete Vere had the opportunity to interview Joe Hueglin, a former Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament from the Niagara region, and a founder of the Progressive Canadian Party. Vere: Given that the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance have now united to provide Canadians with a credible alternative to the Liberals, why the need for the Progressive Canadian Party? Hueglin: The "alternative" was created through the Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and his collaborators creating the mechanisms for circumventing the will of the membership as it was prior to the Ides of October. The Agreement in Principle was presented as a fait accompli to be either accepted or rejected in toto . The pre-existing membership was overwhelmed by enabling those who did not adhere to the Aims of the Party to become members though this was a constitutional condition of membership, by having winner take all rather than proportional voting to accept or reject in the Ridings and by pre organized YES Committees acting to ensure their supporters attended Riding meetings.
