To the Columbia Community: We would like to emphasize that our organization disagrees with Affirmative Action, but passes no judgement on the merit of students selected under that policy. It is wrong and patently absurd to attack individuals on the basis of a policy that they personally have no control over and do not necessarily support. Certainly at an institution like Columbia, where far more qualified students apply than can be admitted, discrimination at the selections process can be implemented without having any bearing on the qualifications of the students. However, as event planner, I do take full responsibility for the disorganization that lead to these misconceptions and misunderstandings, and will endeavor to prevent them from happening again. Additionally, it has been brought to our attention that members of the Columbia community have been concerned by racist and hostile comments posted on our online petition, which was at that time hosted by a third party website. The internet being what it is, anyone can post comments, the most ridiculous of which were posted under assumed names. We are sorry for their actions, which have caused hurt and fear in this community, and have taken every effort to dissassociate them from the Columbia community. Immediately after being notified of these comments, we removed the link from our site to petitionline, and have replaced it with an internally hosted petition that will be edited so that such comments do not taint the respectful and civil environment of the academic community. We disavow ourselves from the petition on Petitiononline, as they have not responded to our requests to strike the offending entries or to strike the petition altogether Having raised public awareness of the controversy surrounding the issue, we are interested in a constructive dialogue between sides and are seeking an opportunity to discuss and debate the issue with our opponents in a moderated setting.
