Sustainability in Conservation, IUCN, Gland (Switzerland), 1997. Beyond Fences is designed to help professionals involved in conservation initiatives to identify the social concerns that are relevant for their work, assess options for action and implement them. Volume 1 is a companion to a process of planning, evaluating or re-designing a conservation initiative; an experience of 'learning by doing' expected to involve a series of meetings and field-based activities. Volume 2 is a reference book to be consulted, as needed, at various stages in the same process. To make it easier to navigate this document is broken down into a number of separate HTML pages. Just use the CONTENTS links below to visit a particular page, or you can use the links provided to browse from one section to the next. However, Beyond Fences is not meant to be read from start to finish. The first volume is a companion to a process, and is meant to be used following the requirements of the process itself. It is not a guide and does not spell out step-by-step procedures. The second is a reference resource, to be consulted on specific items as needs arise. A number of internal links are provided so that the volumes can be used in tandem.

WEB Reference, Dec. 2004 ( Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment ) - Working with Local Communities to Enhance Rural Income and Conserve Natural Resources - A key question in India, as elsewhere, is how to provide incentives to local communities to conserve and sustainably manage their natural resources. Working with its partners, ATREE has helped Soligas , the indigenous people of Biligiri Rangan Hills in the Western Ghats, in establishing forest-based enterprises that incorporate principles of conservation and sustainable management. Here, enterprises based on non-timber products were established. These include a honey processing plant to process honey collected by wild honey bees, a food processing plant for wild fruits, and an herbal medicine plant. Soligas are managing the enterprises, which have generated and distributed profits.

WHY CARRYING CAPACITY?
According to Garrett Hardin (1991), "carrying capacity is the fundamental basis for demographic accounting." On the other hand, conventional economists and planners generally ignore or dismiss the concept when applied to human beings. Their vision of the human economy is one in which "the factors of production are infinitely substitutable for one another" and in which "using any resource more intensely guarantees an increase in output" (Kirchner et al.

The Individual's Role
Energy Conservation
The University's commitment to proactive energy conservation goes back to 1994 and has intensified in the years since. Testimony to our leadership, dedication and success in conservation and sustainability are the awards received . Most recently, the UW Facilities Services and Capital Projects Office won the 2005 Mayor's Environmental Leadership Award, an award program sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and Seattle Public Utilities. Our success depends on community support, partnerships with public utilities, and active pursuit of new measures. Individual students, faculty and staff members are vital players in conservation successes. The individual role in energy management features adjustments in personal behavior, especially in computer use, lighting and equipment utilization, and fume hood operation. We - and the environment - continue to need your individual efforts. Be aware and be active in protecting the future.

Cooling Season
The Pacific Northwest is blessed with a predominately temperate climate during the summer months. Most of our buildings, especially the older campus buildings, do not have air conditioning. Nonetheless, unseasonably warm weather does occur. The hot days can be especially difficult for those unaccustomed to high temperatures.

Major themes of the fair include renewable energy, energy efficiency, environment conservation and natural living. We hope to bring people together on this weekend so they may share information and experience and may return to their homes with a knowledge that they can make a difference to the future of the welfare of this planet and all its living systems. The fair demonstrates that sustainable lifestyles are environmentally sound and cost effective and are very much an attainable reality. The environmental challenge that faces us will require technology, government, industry and individual effort. The major change must come from changes in individual behaviour. The challenge is to make micro-reform happen in each household and to accommodate the small changes in lifestyle habits that will lead to a higher level of energy efficiency, a lower level of resource use and an overall awareness of the issues that can translate into useful change.

Abstract
Forests sustain hundreds of economies across Canada. The forest industry is an active player in the conservation and sustainability of forested ecosystems. Forests are managed from a legal perspective by provincial and territorial legislation. The primary objective of forest management is timber production, which is achieved through harvesting and regenerating areas that have been harvested or damaged by fire or insects. Clearcutting has been the main method of harvesting in Canada. However, selective cutting methods are being promoted and investigated as alternatives where clearcutting may have negative impacts on wildlife habitat or water resources. Forested areas are managed for timber production, mostly in the Boreal Shield, Atlantic Maritime, Montane Cordillera, and Pacific Maritime ecozones. About 42% of Canada is forested, but less than 30% of the forested area is managed for timber production - mostly in the Boreal Shield, Atlantic Maritime, Montane Cordillera and Pacific Maritime ecozones.

5-8 April 2001 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sustainability in the context of historic and cultural resources means ensuring the continuing contribution that heritage can make to the present, through the thoughtful management of change responsive to the historic environment . Only when history is rightly viewed as that continuous change, can we speak of an integrated and sustainable environment. By shifting the focus on perception and valuation, conservation becomes a dynamic process integrating old and new and involving greater dialogue for effective stewardship. Sustainability emphasizes the need for long-term views. Unless we understand how cultural resources are being eroded, lost or impacted, and what factors are contributing to those processes, we will not be able to manage, let alone pass this heritage on to the next generation. Effective heritage management involves both knowing what is important and understanding how that importance is vulnerable to loss and change.
