Download and print full report (845 Kb PDF file) This is the first Sustainability Report for Manitoba, required under The Sustainable Development Act . Its purpose is to provide Manitobans with timely, accurate information on important sustainability issues and trends. It is a way of monitoring Manitoba’s sustainability by tracking and interpreting key indicators in the province’s many sectors. By studying and reporting on these indicators, we can keep Manitobans informed about the progress taking place and encourage them to participate in the long-term strategies for sustainable development in Manitoba. "We wish to acknowledge the assistance of the International Institute for Sustainable Development with the calculation of Manitoba's Ecological Footprint and in the preparation of this report" Note: The French version of this report will be made available in the near future.

Legacy of Stewardship
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park
By Kevin Leichner, National Parks of New York Harbor
A Legacy Lives On
This was the boyhood landscape of George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) who experienced the early deforestation of Vermont as a young man. Later, as President Lincoln's ambassador to Italy, he would advocate in his momentous 1864 book, Man and Nature , for humans to "become a co-worker with nature in the reconstruction of the damaged fabric." Marsh believed commerce and conservation could be complementary forces in the cause of stewardship. Published in the midst of the Civil War and a contemporary to Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species Man and Nature became one of the founding texts of America's conservation movement.
Inspired by Marsh, Frederick Billings (1823-1890), who made his fortune in the West, returned to Vermont and established a farm and forest on the former Marsh property that would serve as a model of land stewardship. Billings had a vision of social improvement and rural recovery based in part on reforestation, agricultural improvement, and conservation. As Billings planted trees by the thousands, he simultaneously developed the carriage roads system to demonstrate his pioneer forestry work to the public and enhance his new estate's productivity and beauty.

Energy Efficiency, conservation and sustainability conservation andsustainability, the following keys issues are addressed and are taken into account
http://www.energy.gov.mm/efficiency_conservation_sustainability.htm
Energy Efficiency, Conservation and Sustainability 1. Introduction Energy utilization in Myanmar mainly depends upon traditional energy such as Fuelwood, Charcoal and Biomass. During 1999-2000, 35 percent of the total energy consumption is contributed by commercial energy such as oil, natural gas, coal and hydropower. The balance utilization of different energy types have all along been emphasized and increased production of commercial energy has been prioritized in order to replace traditional energy types and at the same time to meet the requirement of industrial development programme. Myanmar has abundant renewable energy sources such as Hydropower, Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Biomass and other types of renewable energy sources. Renewable Energy , i.e., Hydroelectricity and Biomass contributed 67 percent of total energy consumption. Biomass in the form of Fuelwood, Charcoal, Agriculture waste and animal dung are predominantly used. To liberalize the trade and to open up private sector investment opportunities, Myanmar has established a new economic system based on market oriented economy. Thus, the Government promulgated Union of Myanmar Foreign Investment Law and its related procedure in 1988. As the outcome of the new economic policy, new investments in all sectors of economy and also construction and infrastructure developments are growing at a faster pace, and the energy demand growth has been increasing to fill the gap that occurred due to change from supply oriented to demand oriented. It is estimated that the energy demand growth will rapidly increase up to Year 2003-2004 and later will increase gradually at a single digit.

Next Landholders Institute Inc home Landholders Institute Inc Conservation v. Sustainability The words "conservation" and "sustainability" are often used almost as if they were interchangable in meaning. There is a general impression in the community that a person who aims to farm land sustainably will need to also need to be a conservationist and, vice versa. The view is, that it is necessary to conserve native plants and animals everywhere in the places that they presently exist if we want to be sustainable.
Coupled with this perception is the assumption that farmers should pay all the costs associated with being sustainable since it is his future that he is sustaining and that naturally he needs to conserve native flora and fauna as a part of that process.
The two ideas of "conservation" and "sustainability" are closely related so it is natural that are sometimes confused in the minds of people who have no direct involvement in either of them. The aim of this article is to clarify the confusion.
Sustainability
The word sustainability is usually used to mean sustainable production of agricultural products, that is farming the land in such a way that it stays healthy and productive and will be in as good or better shape in a hundred years time as it is now. Landholders will use any mix of species (native or exotic) to achieve this ends. They generally have few ideals but many practicalities to shape their choice of species

What are the school awards?
The Sustainable Schools Awards program reflects our vision of a sustainable environment. We hope these awards will encourage Washington State public schools to continue having positive impact by embracing the concept of environmental sustainability.
If your school has been participating in resource conservation and sustainability, or is interested in participating then it could be eligible for a award from Ecology.
The Terry Husseman Sustainable School Awards program (originally called the Outstanding Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards ) has evolved in pace with changing policies and practices in both the public and the private sectors. The importance of waste reduction as a facet of a fully developed resource conservation or sustainability program continues to grow. This award program recognizes Washington State Public schools for their successes managing materials and wastes in a sustainable fashion.
