Our mission: People are changing the environment more rapidly than ever before in the history of humanity. The SILVIS lab examines these changes at broad spatial scales. We study processes that cause changes, quantify patterns of change, and assess effects of these changes on the environment. Our research contributes to conservation biology and landscape ecology, and relies heavily on GIS and remote sensing. Our overarching goal is to inform and influence policy and management decisions from an ecological perspective, thus contributing to a sustainable future.

The CHM is based in the Natural History Division (NHD) which has been the pioneer of science studies in Jamaica. Formerly the Science Museum, it is the oldest division of the Institute which was founded in 1879. The NHD aims to stimulate in Jamaicans and visitors, an interest in and appreciation of Jamaica's flora and fauna. Major activities include the collection, storage and preservation of floral and faunal specimens; providing information to the public on Jamaican natural history and pursuing scientific investigations. At the national level, the CHM will support the implementation of the CBD which Jamaica ratified to on January 6, 1995. Links are provided to Jamaican biodiversity-related information and organisations as well as to the global CHM which has links to global biodiversity information, scientific and technical intitiatives, search engines and funding opportunities.

Recreational Fishing - Beyond the Hype
Recreational Fishing: Separating Fact from Fiction
