http://www.iwla.org/SOS/handbook/intro.html
Handbook for Wetlands Conservation and Sustainability:
Introduction Wetlands have been central to the League’s dedication to clean water and wildlife throughout the League’s history. The Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) was formed in 1922 by 54 anglers who banded together to save the Mississippi River. Wetlands have been central to the League’s dedication to clean water and wildlife throughout the League’s history. In 1923, one of its first victories was the establishment of the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 300 miles of the river. This refuge protects all bottomlands from drainage from Lake Pepin, Minn. to Rock Island, Ill. In 1924, League members identified water pollution, deforestation and wetlands drainage as the most pressing issues facing the country. During the last 76 years, the IWLA has worked at the national level to create legislation to protect wetlands and at the local level through the League’s 350 chapters. In the past, most of the League’s educational materials about wetlands have focused on regulatory avenues for wetlands conservation. It is now apparent that legal avenues alone will not protect wetlands as urban sprawl and development engulf our nation’s natural areas. The "Handbook for Wetlands Conservation and Sustainability" was created as part of the wetlands education initiative started by the League’s Save Our Streams (SOS) Program to help people become wetland stewards by learning about wetland ecology, how wetlands function and what benefits they provide to society. The purpose of this handbook is not to produce wetland scientists but to provide basic information to people who do not have a background in science and to encourage them to consult with experts in the field.

We feel that the Earth's resources are finite and all human beings should conserve them. Our water and air are the most obvious examples of resources that mankind has chosen to not care for. Clean water is becoming scarcer in many parts of the world and the air we breathe is becoming more contaminated with automobile exhaust and pollution created by manufacturing processes.
What have we done to preserve the earth's resources?
At the Cedar House Inn we are sensitive to the Earth we call home and the utilization of our natural resources. We strive to offer guests a lodging alternative that has less impact on the earth's resources.
Inn Design
The inn is designed using passive solar principles. The structure faces south to capture the sun's warmth with most windows located on the southern, eastern and western exposures. Larger than normal roof overhangs allow winter sunlight to reach inside the home and summer sun to be deflected. Quarry tile floors in the living room collect the winter sun's heat thereby reducing the need for conventional heating in the day time hours. An airtight wood stove in the living room helps in heating the inn during evening hours. We use only standing dead wood and newly fallen trees for our cord wood. Framing lumber for the inn was purchased from local saw mills.

Insight Sustainability, Stability, and Resilience Donald Ludwig Brian Walker , and Crawford S. Holling Department of Mathematics, University of British Columbia; Division of Wildlife and Ecology, CSIRO; Department of Zoology, University of Florida ABSTRACT The purpose of this essay is to define and refine the concepts of stability and resilience and to demonstrate their value in understanding the behavior of exploited systems. Some ecological systems display several possible stable states. They may also show a hysteresis effect in which, even after a long time, the state of the system may be partly determined by its history. The concept of resilience depends upon our objectives, the types of disturbances that we anticipate, control measures that are available, and the time scale of interest. KEY WORDS: bifurcation; multiple stable states; resilience; stability.

Research , part of Special Feature on Sustainability and Resilience in Boreal Regions Sustainability and Resilience in Boreal Regions: Sources and Consequences of Variability John Pastor Steve Light , and Laurie Sovell
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

Boreal regions are, besides tundra, the globe's only circumpolar terrestrial biome, covering approximately 1.3 x 10 ha in upland forest and 0.26 x 10 ha in peatland (Olson et al. 1983, Apps et al. 1993). They constitute 20% of the world's forested regions, second only to moist tropical forests (Olson et al. 1983). Boreal regions represent some of the last large remaining expanses of wilderness areas, where natural ecosystems remain essentially intact and unmanaged. However, in the past several decades, resource extraction in boreal regions has increased in order to meet growing global demands for fiber and to meet the demands of a growing local resident population. Furthermore, global climate changes are expected to be most extreme in high-latitude areas. Boreal regions, therefore, are substantially at risk from anthropogenic change, but also may represent the last great opportunity to build a sustainable economy based on properly functioning natural ecosystems.
