Both ARC I and ARC II consist of two major parts. The first part is either a very rigorous 8 week period of full-time intensive instruction during the summer (ARC I) OR a very rigorous 24 week period of part-time instruction on Friday evenings and all day Saturdays during the school year (ARC II). The second major part of each program consists of two years of closely supervised teaching in a Connecticut middle or secondary school. The ARC catalog for ARC I 2006 and ARC II 2006-2007 is expected to be available in mid-September. The 2005 ARC catalog is still available for informational purposes and may be accessed by clicking here . Public School Vacancies in Connecticut The Connecticut Education Association provides this monthly listing of job vacancies as a service to the Education community.
Please use the contact information for each district for questions on the vacancies. CEA lists the vacancies; we do not have any specific information regarding the positions. September 2005 NOTICE
CEA believes that Waterbury teachers are unfairly being asked to bear the brunt of years of this city's financial mismanagement. The politically appointed State Oversight Board took control of the city's finances, and in the process, eliminated the collective bargaining rights of teachers. This abrogation of teacher rights will have long-term consequences because educators will choose not to stay in Waterbury and that will reduce the quality of teaching.
On March 5, 2004, the CEA Board of Directors unanimously adopted a resolution recommending that certified teachers not seek employment in Waterbury until the situation is remedied. Below is the text of the resolution: Move to adopt the following resolution for the Waterbury Teachers Association: Whereas, a cornerstone of CEA has been to support a negotiations law that allows for a fair process promoting good working conditions for teachers

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

A Message From Catherine J. Fellows The field of dance education is about to take an exciting step forward in Connecticut's public schools. The Connecticut State Department of Education, working with members of the dance community, is developing guidelines for teacher certification in dance. Certification is literally a "license" to be a public school teacher within a state. Connecticut will join other states such as New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island that have already instituted certification in dance. RETURN TO DANCE @ CCSU

Teacher Certification
For all students intending to apply to either the elementary or secondary teacher certification program at Connecticut College. (Posted October 22, 2004) The Education Department is instituting a new application process effective December 2004. Any student not formally admitted to the certification program by this date is subject to the new application guidelines.* All forms relevant to the new application process are currently available at the Education Department office in Bolles House. Applicants should see Administrative Assistant Barbara Hysler for this information. One of the more substantive changes is that rather then interview candidates throughout the year, the department will interview candidates once per semester. The first interview date is set for Friday, January 28, 2005. Students will come to the department in fifteen-minute intervals to be interviewed by two faculty members, one student, and one public school official. Only those students who have completed all other aspects of the application process (e.g. application form, essay, letters of recommendation) and have them filed in the Education Department office by December 1, 2004 will be eligible for the interview.
