Education: General Works
The history of public and private elementary, secondary, and collegiate education in Connecticut is, on the whole, a happy one, though a close inspection of the condition of schools throughout the state's history will not support that generalization unless set in a national context. Things get bad in Connecticut from time to time, and are never as good as they should be for delivering quality education but, compared with almost every other state in the United Statesprobably in the worldwe're stars. There are many general histories of education in America, and a study of one of them should form the first step in an investigation of education in Connecticut. A number of works treat the history of public education in Connecticut m a general way. One of the best is Charles L. Ames' essay "History of Education in Connecticut, 1818-1925," in Vol. V of Osborn’s History of Connecticut in Monographic Form . It is only about fifty pages and stops in 1925. Ames taught for many years in rural one-room schoolhouses and then for a third of a century in Hartford. At the time he wrote this essay, he was a member of the State Board of Education. Another old standard work, now superseded, is Bernard C. Steiner

Connecticut School Funding Bills Reflect Priorities
Connecticut – Bills Reflect Education Priorities By Rachel Gottlieb April 9, 2005, The Hartford Courant Connecticut On Friday, the education committee signed off on a bill that addresses some of the state’s education priorities. If the General Assembly approves it, there will be more funding for early childhood education, magnet schools and school lunches, and the cap on charter school enrollment would be raised.  Under another proposed bill, the state would pay for a larger portion of school construction for districts that designate at least 10 percent of their budgets for school maintenance. Connecticut’s schools are worse than they look
September 9, 2004 By Jay P. Greene and Greg Forster Connecticut's students rank 19th in the nation for academic achievement. At first glance that might seem acceptable, if not great. But a new study by the Manhattan Institute finds that Connecticut ranks that high only because its students face fewer life challenges than students in other states. Remove the effects of student characteristics, and Connecticut schools rank a much less comforting 29th in the nation. The best comparison we have for states' academic outcomes is eighth-grade scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, ``the nation's report card,'' a test administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Scores for eighth grade are preferable because they're the oldest grade for which state-by-state comparisons are available. Connecticut schools look passably good by this yardstick. In reading, 77 percent of Connecticut students reach the ``basic'' level of achievement, the lowest level recognized by the test. In math, 73 percent of students reach the basic level. These scores rank Connecticut 19th in the nation not stellar, but in the top half.

ConneCT kids is the official kids website for the State of connecticut and provides Fax number, and a general school email address on the home page.
http://www.kids.state.ct.us/guidelines.htm
Guidelines for Designing Successful School Websites Over the past two years, we have reviewed hundreds of school websites as part of our "Connecticut Schools on the Web" database project http://www.kids.state.ct.us/Scripts/ctschools.asp In order that schools might benefit from our experience and be able to apply the knowledge we have gained to the development of their websites, we offer the following suggested standards They may be used as a checklist, and any or all of the items may be adopted. The ConneCT Kids Committee encourages your originality and creativity in the design of school websites, but we also believe that the use of certain basic standards and design elements will help produce more useful, informative and functional school websites. Our measure of success is the efficiency with which the average visitor to your website can locate and acquire the information that they are seeking, information we believe most visitors will want to know. It is also a goal of the ConneCT Kids Committee to encourage schools to adopt published accessibility standards so that those visitors who utilize assistive technologies will be afforded the same level of access to your websites as is the general public.

ConneCT Kids colonial robin Early Connecticut History Before the first settlers came to Connecticut, robins lived here along with Native American tribes http://www.kidinfo.com/American_History/Native_Americans.html We watched them hunt and fish in the woodlands and streams. They made many trails to allow them to travel between villages to trade. You can still hike many of these trails today http://www.ctwoodlands.org/blue%20trails/bthistory.html#map These Native Americans gave something else to Connecticut – its name. The name Connecticut comes from a Native American word "Quinatucquet," which meant "Beside the Long Tidal River." Do you know how long the Connecticut River is? (Answer 360 miles from Vermont to Long Island Sound) I have flown over it many times. The first Europeans we saw landing on Connecticut shores were Dutch traders ( http://www.coldspringschool.com/history/early.html ) who sailed up the Connecticut River around the year 1614, and landed near Hartford. By the year 1633, they had purchased land from the Pequot Tribe and made a permanent settlement. Within the next year, we saw many English settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, exploring throughout the Connecticut Valley area. They were impressed with the beauty of the countryside and decided to stay. It was in the town of Wethersfield (
