At White River Junction, the flow of the Connecticut is swelled by the White River, whose own watershed of tributaries reaches deep into central Vermont. The Ottauquechee River enters the Connecticut to the south after its course through Quechee Gorge, one of the geologic wonders of the region. The gorge, cut down through 150 feet of bedrock, is visible from a bridge over Route 4. (See Recreation below.)
The Montshire Museum in Norwich, VT, is a hands-on science museum with dozens of exhibits relating to the natural and physical sciences, technology, and ecology, including the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The self-guiding museum is engaging for adults and children of all ages, and is located on a 110-acre site on the Connecticut River with a network of easy-to-moderate walking trails.
The Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, VT offers year-round educational programs, camps, workshops, events and tours designed to engage people and their communities in the active care of their environment. Its live raptor exhibits are a particular favorite of many return visitors.

Railroads Fairlee, VT, is a small village set in a bend of the Connecticut overlooked by the Palisades, a set of cliffs beyond which nestles Lake Morey, ringed by summer camps, vacation homes, and the Lake Morey Inn. Across the river in Orford, NH, are the seven stately homes of the Orford Ridge, built from 1773 to 1838, which have been called the finest group of Federal-style houses in the United States. Among their owners was Samuel Morey, who ran a steamboat on the river here in 1793, eighteen years before Robert Fulton took credit for the invention on the Hudson River. Recreational boating is still popular in this quiet stretch of the river lush with some of the finest agricultural lands in the entire Connecticut River Valley.
The cliffs above Fairlee are a striking view in themselves, but the careful watcher may be rewarded by the sight of a swift flash – peregrine falcons diving from their nest on the Palisades. This is one of several Connecticut River Valley nesting sites for these birds, which are making a comeback from near extinction. Many "setbacks," where tributaries enter the main stem of the river, are excellent bird watching sites. Providing valuable waterfowl habitat, many of these wetlands have been protected by the states and the Upper Valley Land Trust in concert with the towns and private property owners. Current Issues: Military Recruitment at Yale Law School Yale Law School's Career Development Office helps students and graduates identify career objectives and obtain employment that meets those objectives. The office arranges twice-yearly interview programs and provides career and contact information for employers and students.
Yale Law School has a long-standing nondiscrimination policy, adopted in 1978, which states that:
Yale Law School is committed to a policy against discrimination based upon age, color, handicap or disability, ethnic or national origin, race, religion, religious creed, gender (including discrimination taking the form of sexual harassment), marital, parental or veteran status, sexual orientation, or the prejudice of clients. All employers using the school's placement services are required to abide by this policy.
The Law School will give access to, but will not aid, employers who refuse to follow this policy. An employer who is unwilling or unable to abide by the policy in its entirety is not barred from campus, or from recruiting. Such an employer may independently arrange to meet with interested students at the Law School or elsewhere. Such an employer, however, may not avail itself of the interview-coordination services provided by CDO.

    Non-discrimination Policy
PDF version of this document The goal of equal employment opportunity, which is embodied in federal and states laws forbidding discrimination in employment, is inherent in the ideals of the legal profession and represents a special obligation to the profession as well as the School of Law. The School of Law assumes that prospective employers utilizing the services of the Law School's Career Services office acknowledge the principle of equal opportunity for all students and graduates. It is expected also that their employment policies comply with the letter and the spirit of law affording equal employment opportunity.
    Military Recruitment On-Campus
Various branches of the US military interview on our campus. While federal law forces us to accommodate this, neither the Office of Career Services nor the School of Law endorse the ongoing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In fact, we oppose such practices and bar prospective employers with discriminatory policies from participating in campus recruiting. However, pursuant to the provisions of the Congressionally-enacted Solomon Amendment, we must allow military recruiting or lose essential federal funding. The military interviews law school students through on-campus interview programs and through participation in job fairs. We reiterate our policy and position on military recruiting: the Congress has mandated, through the passage of the Solomon Amendment, that the United States Department of Defense must discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. The University of Connecticut School of Law, as well as the Association of American Law Schools, has a policy against such discrimination. The School of Law affords the United States Department of Defense access to school facilities for recruiting purposes only because, under the Solomon Amendment to the Education Act, federal funds that support students at this law school will be withheld if access is limited. The School of Law continues to deplore the discriminatory practices in military recruiting. Permitting the Department of Defense access to school facilities is not an endorsement of discriminatory practices.

Within the corridors of these historic institutions, ambition, aptitude, and talent are rewarded with some of the best and most affordable educational opportunities available in America. These academies, operated by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marines, and Coast Guard, are five of the best kept secrets in American higher education. Not only do these schools rival the best private colleges in the country in terms of quality of education, they do so at no cost to the student or family. In exchange for this free education, the students agree to accept commissioning for a number of years as an officer in the armed services or the U.S. Merchant Marine.

History of Norwich University
Images of Its Past
Few American institutions of higher learning as old as Norwich University still closely adhere to the educational principles of its founders. Norwich is one of the exceptions and in a very substantial sense the institution today is the lengthened shadow of its founder, Captain Alden Partridge. The educational philosophy of Alden Partridge continues to guide Norwich University on its 175th anniversary and serves as a touchstone by which the university can be measured and appraised. Among the deficiencies Partridge saw in traditional "liberal education" was that it was too restrictive and not liberal enough. The standard curriculum was not sufficiently practical and was not designed to prepare youth for the duties of an American citizen. The existing system of education was deficient because it did not give adequate attention to such matters as the operations of government or to the important sources of national wealth—"agriculture, commerce, and manufacturers."

U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY BAND HERITAGE
The United States Military Academy Band, the U.S. Army’s oldest active band and the oldest unit at West Point, traces its roots to the Revolutionary War. At that time, fifers and drummers were stationed with companies of minutemen on Constitution Island, across the river from West Point. In 1778, General Samuel Holden Parsons’ 1 st Connecticut Brigade crossed the Hudson River and established West Point as a permanent military post. After the American Revolution, Congress disbanded most of the Continental Army, but “the 55 men at West Point,” members of the 2 nd Continental Artillery, remained. Among their ranks stood at least one drummer and one fifer, who alone maintained the tradition of military music at West Point. With the establishment of the United States Military Academy in 1802 came an increased demand for military music. As the academy grew, it needed fifers, drummers and buglers to drill the new cadets and provide an audible order to their duty day. In 1817 the ensemble was named the “West Point Band,” and by this time was performing on a full range of instruments, which included two bassoons, two Royal Kent bugles, a tenor bugle, ten clarinets, three French horns, a serpent (an early bass horn), cymbals, a bass drum, eight flutes, and two trumpets. In 1866 it received the official title of the “United States Military Academy Band.”
