UConn Signs 26 to National Letters of Intent
February 2, 2005 STORRS, CONN. - University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced on Wednesday that the Huskies have signed 26 student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent to join the UConn program. The press conference was held at the Goodwin Hotel Atrium in downtown Hartford and followed by a special presentation to Husky fans and donors that was attended by over 300 people (right). "With this outstanding group of student-athletes, we filled the holes of our graduating seniors; and in so doing, we have become bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than we have been in previous years," Edsall says. "I was impressed with the leadership, maturity and character that this group displayed throughout the recruiting process. They will come here and fit right in with our current student-athletes to continue the rise of the University of Connecticut football program." UConn posted an 8-4 record in 2004 and defeated Toledo in the Motor City Bowl by a score of 39-10. The bowl appearance was the first in school history as the Huskies were in just their third season of competition at a Division I-A level. UConn also made its debut as a member of the BIG EAST Conference in 2004 and had a 3-3 record in the league - including a win over Pittsburgh, which represented the league in the Bowl Championship Series. In it’s inaugural season as a BIG EAST member, UConn led the conference in both total offense and total defense.

Previously, the facility was known as Camp Weicker, after Lowell Weicker, Jr., whose political career spanded over 32 years, including three terms as a U.S. Senator and Governor of Connecticut.

Connecticut, New Jersey and New York stand to lose more than 15,000 jobs under the base closing recommendations announced by the Pentagon today.
Four Connecticut military bases, including the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton, are on the Pentagon's list of proposed base closures. Nearly all of the 8,600 jobs expected to be lost are from the Groton base. Connecticut officials say the base is crucial to the region because of its $2.5 billion effect on the economy.
In New Jersey, Fort Monmouth is among the bases the Defense Department wants to close. A total of 5300 hundred jobs would be eliminated.
New York fared best. Military facilities statewide would lose some 68 total military positions and nearly 1,000 civilian jobs, according to Department of Defense figures.
The United States Military Academy in West Point would gain 226 military and 38 civilian positions under the proposed changes.
Fort Drum, the state's largest active military post has been spared any major proposed cuts in the Pentagon's list of bases to be closed or realigned.
In Connecticut, the Pentagon also recommended closing Sgt. Libby U.S. Army Reserve Center in New Haven, Turner U.S. Army Reserve Center in Fairfield and the U.S. Army Reserve Center Maintenance Support Facility, Middletown. The Bradley International Airport Air Guard Station would be realigned.

The 2003-2004 school year marked some exciting beginnings for the North Haven Public Schools. We welcomed our new superintendent Sara-Jane R. Querfeld and the new principal at Ridge Road Elementary School, Meredith Menton. New Board of Education member Steve DiCapua was elected in November. Mr. DiCapua replaced long-time board member, Peter Johnson, who retired after many years of service. The opening of the 2003-2004 school year began smoothly with 3777 students and 9 new teach-ers replacing staff who had retired or resigned. At the opening day for teachers, Superintendent of Schools Sara Querfeld announced that Marge Drucker, science teacher at the Middle School, had been selected as North Haven's 2004 Teacher of the Year.
The major challenges for the district under the new superintendent were the unexpected loss of federal funding for our four elementary reading teachers, air quality concerns made worse by mold being found at Clintonville Elementary School, and the need to reconfigure the Middle School schedule to decrease class size and increase instructional time. In addition, the district was focused on the building of the new North Haven High School.
In September, Middle School art teacher Christine Oulevey received the 2003 Connecticut Art Education Association Award. Six of our high school students worked with artist David Millen and displayed their sculpture in his garden show. The school district organized a Business Education Council (BEC). The first BEC meeting was well attended, and subsequent meetings were planned. The group focused on revitalizing the certificate of employability and other ways to partner with businesses. A mentor breakfast held in May to kick-off the new certificate program was attended by 71 students and 30 members of the business community.

What Military Schools Have to Offer
    Military Schools General Rules
These types of schools all have very strict guidelines that must be followed, no exceptions. Most schools start at 6 am sharp, and all cadets are expected to be in formation fully dressed in their uniforms, with their boots polished. Girls that are in a military school are not allowed to wear bright nail polish, or lots of makeup. Their hair has to be either put up in buns, or cut above the collar of their uniforms. Most military schools will have their cadets called to formation before allowing them to have their meals.
Privileges are earned in a military school, if you want something you have to work for it. If a cadet wants to play a video game or go to town on the weekend, they have to earn this privilege. To earn these privileges, a cadet has to earn rank; you give nothing, you get nothing. Military schools do not allow any types of misbehaving, this includes fighting, the use of any drug, or sexual activities either in the school or when on leave to go into town. Being able to work together as a team is a requirement that is necessary from every cadet in a military school. Military Schools Not for Everyone Military schools can be great for some children and help them to excel as an adult, but these schools are not for everyone. Some children would not be able to deal with this type of disciplinary school. Any child with the following problems probably would not do well in a military school. If they:
