Clue #2 And yet, relatively few outsiders journey here. For that matter, when asked, most would have trouble finding it on a map. Amos Doolittle. "Connecticut From the best Authorities."
From William Guthrie's New System of Modern Geography An important map of Connecticut from the American edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved . This atlas was issued in 1795 by Mathew Carey, a seminal figure in early American cartographic publishing. Carey, an Irish immigrant, established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm. He set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps, utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end. Carey is important, then, not only for the excellent maps he produced, but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing, to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S. Tanner. This map of Connecticut is a fine example of from Carey's atlas. It is a slightly revised version of the map that was first issued the year before (it can be identified by the addition of the reference to Carey's atlas). Topographical information is neatly portrayed, including towns, rivers, mountains, and roads. The counties and townships are indicated and named. The map contains two unusual and interesting features. Along the western border is a narrow strip between Connecticut and New York, entitled "Oblong," which was an area of dispute between the states. In the top left corner of the map is the label "State of Vermont," in an area which is actually part of Massachusetts. Also of great interest is the finely etched title cartouche, by Amos Doolittle. One of the best and earliest maps of the state.

  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION
  • Geography is often called the science of where, and geographers use their expertise to figure out where to build a hospital, a bridge, or a highway. By understanding the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment, geographers find real-world solutions to tough problems, making cities and towns better places to live, helping companies market their products, and protecting and preserving the earth's resources. Career possibilities are boundless. A land use planner works to expand a city's downtown, plan parks and open spaces, or route a new highway. A location specialist works for a mall developer, finding just the right spot to build. A mapping specialist uses the latest in computer and remote-sensing equipment to construct maps for the U.S. Department of Defense. A teacher inspires students to explore their world. What connects all of these professionals? There's a good chance they were geography majors. National recognition for geography education is on the rise, too. A recent national education initiative identified geography as one of five core curriculum subjects that Americans will be required to master throughout their elementary and secondary school careers during the next decade.

U.S. Geological Survey Topographic Maps We stock over one hundred 7 ½ minute (1:24,000) and 7 ½ x 15 minute (1:25,000) quadrangles for New Hampshire, covering the Lakes Region, White Mountain National Forest (include the Maine portion), and the North Country up to the Canadian border. For “peakbagging” enthusiasts, we carry topos for all of New England's “Hundred Highest” peaks in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. The majority of the quads are in the 7 ½ minute series at a 1:24,000 scale. These are flat maps measuring 22” x 27” and are sent rolled in a tube. They have either 40 or 20-foot contours. There are still a few 7 ½ x 15 minute maps that measure 24” x 40” and come folded to road map size (4” x 8 ¼”). They are metric at 1:25,000 scale with 6-meter contours and cover twice the area of a 7 ½ minute map. These maps are $6.00 each. We also carry a number of USGS topo maps in the 1:100,000 scale for New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Each one of these covers a large area, equivalent to thirty-two 7 ½ minute quads. They measure 29” x 44” and come folded to 4” x 8 ¼”. They are metric with a contour interval of 20 meters. These maps provide a good overview of terrain for a large area. Price is $7.00 each.
