Connecticut library history has been well served by Mary L. Hart’s contribution to the State Library History Bibliography Series published by The Journal of Library History no. 8, “A Bibliography of Connecticut Library History,” 7 (July, 1972) :251-74. There are 199 items, fifty-eight relating to the collections at Yale, where Ms. Hart worked. There are sections on public libraries, special libraries, and private collectors. The list below, which includes some items not found in Ms. Hart’s bibliography, focuses on public libraries only. Among other omissions are many unpublished master’s theses on individual town libraries and on the history of library programs in Connecticut public schools. For background and context: Ditzion, Sidney. Arsenals of a Democratic Culture: A Social History of the American Public Library Movement in New England...1850 to 1900 . The Connecticut Library Association supports this resolution on the USA PATRIOT Act and related measures that infringe on the rights of library patrons.
WHEREAS, the professional ethic of librarianship is to facilitate the free flow of information, to facilitate its distribution and to protect the privacy of those who seek information; and
WHEREAS, the privacy and confidentiality of those who seek and use recorded knowledge and information are of the highest importance; and

The EarthBook Project T he mission of the EarthBook project is to provide an educational resource for northeastern Connecticut families that will enable them to locate and utilize environmental education materials in their hometowns. These materials are located at environmental sites and at public libraries. It is hoped that this initiative will help to instill a love of the natural world in children and that it encourages parents and children to visit libraries and experience the joy of reading.
The EarthBook Project was completed by Americorps VISTA Associates during the summer of 2001. This project was co-sponsored by the Corporation for National Service Connecticut Campus Compact, and Eastern Connecticut State University. Families in Northeast Connecticut can learn about the environment in many ways, including visiting environmental programs in the area, using the wide array of resources that are available in public libraries, and finding information on the internet. VISTA Associates who worked on the EarthBook project completed activities that will encourage families to use all three sources of information. (VISTA EarthBook Project Rationale.)

Michael Golrick, CLA President, and Bruce Harvey, Director of the Housatonic Community-Technical College Library, made opening remarks. Michael indicated his strong support for the section and the conference, and in fact he stayed throughout the day to attend sessions. As most of the attendees were not CLA members, he extolled the value of membership in both CLA and the LTA section as part of a professional development plan. Bruce graciously welcomed everyone to the school, and especially encouraged all to take a moment to view the fine artwork on display throughout the building. The conference was divided into three session "blocks", with several workshop choices in each time slot. The first session offered Basic Reference techniques with an enthusiastic Clara Ogbaa, co-ordinator of Bibliographic Instruction and Reference Librarian at Southern CT State University. Another session was titled "The Passionate Paraprofessional: Making Personal Meaning Out of Your Professional Growth". Pat Ciccone, a career counselor at Manchester Community-Technical College, gave thought-provoking and insightful guidance in developing the right pathway to success and satisfaction in your own career development. The third workshop held concurrently was Basic Book Repair. Mary Bogan from the Northeast Document Conservation Center reviewed the basics of a preservation program and showed some simple book repair techniques to a rapt audience.

    Poster Printing Information
The M ap A nd G eographic I nformation C enter (MAGIC) has recently received a most remarkable gift: an original Clark and Tackabury 1859 topographical wall map of Connecticut, of which only four copies are known to exist. Mrs. Diana Levy generously donated the map in honor of her husband, Colonel Levy, who grew up in Abingdon, Connecticut, before entering U.S. Army, Military Intelligence. He purchased the map at a yard sale sometime after World War II. Following his death in 2003, his will stipulated that his executors find an appropriate home for the map “somewhere in Connecticut.” MAGIC was the lucky recipient. The 6' x 4' map was photographed and the negative scanned to produce this image. Donations to conserve this remarkable map will be appreciated.
