101. GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY OF THE NEW YORK BIGHT
The Newark Basin (in New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and the connecticut Hunter College, Department of geography Brooklyn College, Department of Geology
http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/bight/newark.html
NEWARK BASIN AND CONNECTICUT RIVER BASIN
The Palisades rise above the western edge of the Hudson River. The Palisades mark the eastern margin of the Newark Basin in Northern New Jersey. The George Washington Bridge and Midtown Manhattan are in the distance.
The Newark Basin (in New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and the Connecticut River Basin are both "aborted rift" basins (rift basins that are no longer actively widening via rift-style tectonism - see map below). Both basins contain characteristic sedimentary sandstones and mudrocks that usually bear a red or brownish appearance from an abundance of iron oxide minerals (hematite and limonite). (Homes built of stone from the Newark Basin are called "brownstones.") Fossils are not abundant, but early Mesozoic dinosaur skeletons and trackways have been found. Freshwater shell material and poorly preserved fish and plant remains are also found in some areas. Formation of the Newark Basin and Early Atlantic Basin Both the Newark and Connecticut river basins contain "traprocks." Traprocks are mineral-rich mafic volcanic rocks. Their resistance to erosion (relative to the surrounding sandstone and shale produce elevated regions above the surrounding terrain. They form the core of gently dipping cuestas throughout the Mesozoic basins along the Atlantic Margin. The volcanic rocks formed in three ways:
  • 1. The mafic igneous bodies intruded upward between sedimentary layers forming sills and stocks, cooling in the subsurface. The classic example of a volcanic sill is the Palisades along the western side of the Hudson River.

State Curriculum Frameworks and Content Standards - Draft September 1995
    The Arts and Geography
    Multidisciplinary Curriculum Frameworks
APPLICATION NO : R215G30026 APPLICANT : Connecticut State Department of Education Division of Teaching and Learning 165 Capitol Avenue Hartford, Connecticut 06106 CONTACT PERSON : Mitchell Chester TELEPHONE : (203) 566-5871 AWARD TO DATE : $747,905 PROJECT PERIOD : 07/01/93-06/30/96 The purpose of this proposal is to provide the State of Connecticut with three new curriculum frameworks: one in geography, one in the arts, and a multidisciplinary arts and geography framework. These frameworks will delineate the curricular, instructional and assessment components of world-class geography, arts, and multidisciplinary geography/arts programs for ALL students. In conjunction with developing the frameworks, the project will produce supporting materials (e.g., examples of good assessment practices) to serve as resources for school districts as they implement the frameworks, provide training for teachers and curriculum specialists in the implementation of the frameworks, and disseminate the frameworks throughout the state. The curriculum frameworks will help the state achieve its goals of significantly reducing racial isolation in the state's public schools, and providing quality, integrated education for all students. The project's design for the development of these frameworks entails a broadly based collaborative process with teachers of geography and the arts, selected school districts, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the Connecticut Geographic Alliance, the staff of the State Department of Education, and selected outside experts and resource people. In addition, the process utilizes the expertise of the state's Regional Educational Service Centers, institutions of higher education, professional education organizations, business organizations and community groups.

  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION
  • Geography is often called the science of where, and geographers use their expertise to figure out where to build a hospital, a bridge, or a highway. By understanding the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment, geographers find real-world solutions to tough problems, making cities and towns better places to live, helping companies market their products, and protecting and preserving the earth's resources. Career possibilities are boundless. A land use planner works to expand a city's downtown, plan parks and open spaces, or route a new highway. A location specialist works for a mall developer, finding just the right spot to build. A mapping specialist uses the latest in computer and remote-sensing equipment to construct maps for the U.S. Department of Defense. A teacher inspires students to explore their world. What connects all of these professionals? There's a good chance they were geography majors. National recognition for geography education is on the rise, too. A recent national education initiative identified geography as one of five core curriculum subjects that Americans will be required to master throughout their elementary and secondary school careers during the next decade.
