Amos Doolittle. "Connecticut From the best Authorities."
From William Guthrie's New System of Modern Geography An important map of Connecticut from the American edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved . This atlas was issued in 1795 by Mathew Carey, a seminal figure in early American cartographic publishing. Carey, an Irish immigrant, established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm. He set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps, utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end. Carey is important, then, not only for the excellent maps he produced, but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing, to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S. Tanner. This map of Connecticut is a fine example of from Carey's atlas. It is a slightly revised version of the map that was first issued the year before (it can be identified by the addition of the reference to Carey's atlas). Topographical information is neatly portrayed, including towns, rivers, mountains, and roads. The counties and townships are indicated and named. The map contains two unusual and interesting features. Along the western border is a narrow strip between Connecticut and New York, entitled "Oblong," which was an area of dispute between the states. In the top left corner of the map is the label "State of Vermont," in an area which is actually part of Massachusetts. Also of great interest is the finely etched title cartouche, by Amos Doolittle. One of the best and earliest maps of the state.

Geology of the Berkshire Taconic Landscape
A series of landscape changes over the past 1.2 billion years has created the modern world as we know it today.
Believe it or not, mile-high glaciers, oceans, beaches, huge swampy forests, and 20,000-foot high peaks are all part of the geologic history of the Berkshire Taconic Landscape. It took more than a billion years of geologic time to create the Berkshire Taconic Landscape. Phrases like "old as the hills" make it seem like our mountains have been here forever. Yet these rounded peaks and gravel-lined valleys are far less enduring than they might appear. In fact, these familiar mountains are mere remnants of the far older mountain ranges that once rose more than four miles above sea level. Those earlier ranges were originally formed by the collision of continental plates when the entire region was located south of the equator. At times covered by shallow oceans, and recently buried under nearly a mile of glacial ice, the Berkshire Taconic Landscape that we see today bears evidence of all of these forces and events. Indeed, perhaps more than any other factor, the ancient geologic history of the Berkshire Taconic Landscapeand the natural communities that grew here as a resultmakes it one of The Nature Conservancy's Last Great Places.

GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY OF NEW YORK BIGHT BEACHES
A "Bite" of the Big Apple
This web site is a collection of short reports and image libraries about the natural history of the New York Bight region. The goal of this project is to provide basic information about the beaches scattered throughout the New York Bight, emphasizing those within Gateway National Recreation Area (New York and New Jersey). Each web page linked to this report carries a theme related to the topics listed below. The web pages can be followed in a chronological order by clicking on the NEXT PAGE web link on the bottom of each page. But first...
Check out the "new stuff..." A Brief Geologic History of Raritan Bay. "Lost Culture..."
A bight is a general term for a bend or curve in the shoreline of an open coast. In the New York region it refers to the great expanse of shallow ocean between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey Coast (to the south and west). Because Long Island trends generally east to west in relation to mainland of New Jersey it creates a great right angle in the general geometry of the Atlantic coastline. The Hudson River's outer harbor and the Raritan Bay (shown in the image above) constitute only a fraction of the greater New York Bight region.
