Department Overview

Central Connecticut State University has the oldest and largest graduate program in Geography in the state of Connecticut. The graduate program was initiated in 1962 with a Master of Science in Social Science for in-service teachers who desired to complete the requirements for their permanent teaching certificates. However, the program’s emphasis has changed since state approval was granted in 1976 to offer a Master of Science in Geography. Since that time, students have used the latter degree in the pursuit of a variety of career goals.
Geography is the science of location. The geography faculty teaches students how to use effectively maps and air photos, gather information about places, and make computer analyses. Students use this knowledge to learn about how people use the land in different places, and what impacts humans.

Digital Deerfield 1704: A new perspective on the French and Indian Wars
by Lynne Spichiger and Chris Sturm
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_6/spichiger/ Abstract: In February 2003, on the 300th anniversary of the raid on Deerfield, the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and the Memorial Hall Museum launched a Web site that both commemorates and reinterprets this event from the perspectives of all the cultural groups who were present: Wobanakiak, Kanienkehaka, Wendat, English, and French. The site brings together a multitude of Web elements including historical scenes, narratives of peoples' lives, artifacts and historic documents, interactive maps, voices and songs, essays, illustrations/paintings, and an interactive timeline to provide a window into a world of global political and religious conflict, family stories, and military sagas. Many teachers find that this site - with its wealth of primary source material; its special features like interactive maps and artifacts, zoom function, and magic lens; and its curricula section - is an excellent digital resource for their classrooms. Geography
Generally rectangular in shape, Connecticut extends c.90 mi (145 km) from east to west and c.55 mi (90 km) from north to south. The state is divided into two roughly equal sections, usually called the eastern highland and the western highland, which are separated by the Connecticut Valley lowland. The Connecticut River, which flows through only the northern half of this lowland, veers off to the southeast at Middletown in central Connecticut. In the south along Long Island Sound is a low, rolling coastal plain. The western highland, with the Taconic Mts. and the Litchfield Hills, is more rugged than the eastern highland. A few isolated peaks in the west are over 2,000 ft (610 m) high. The Thames and the rivers emptying into it drain the eastern highland, and the Housatonic, with its chief tributary, the Naugatuck, drains the western highland. The Connecticut shore is a popular summer resort area, and the protected waters of Long Island Sound lure boating enthusiasts. Bridgeport is the largest city, with

Introduction
Watershed Geography Special Designations Special Attributes Issues Confronting The River A Cultural Snapshot Watershed Geography The 410 mile-long Connecticut River is New England's longest river. Its headwaters are Fourth Connecticut Lake at the Canadian border, and it empties into Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook, CT. The watershed encompasses an area of over 11,000 square-miles and includes parts of four states Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The River is the boundary between Vermont and New Hampshire (but is wholly in NH). The watershed is 80% forested, 12% agricultural, 3% developed, and 5% wetlands and water. There are 390 towns, villages and cities, which are home to 2.3 million people. The River drops 2,400 feet from its source to the sea, and has a daily average flow of nearly 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The flow has ranged as high as 282,000 cfs and as low as 971 cfs. The lower 60 miles of the River are tidal, with the boundary between salt and freshwater about 17 miles from its mouth under normal conditions. Its waters represent 70% of the freshwater inflow to L.I. Sound. The Connecticut has 38 major tributaries, 26 of which drain 100 square miles or more. All told, there are over 20,000 miles of streams in the watershed.
