Public Education
Adult Education: Literacy and Self-Advocacy Skills New Hampshire: Since 1998, The Right Question Project has worked with the New Hampshire Bureau of Adult Education to integrate our educational strategy into their Adult Literacy programs. More than 60 educators are using the RQP method to help their students build skills to advocate for themselves and navigate systems. An adult educator shared this story about the impact of RQP on one of her students:
One of my adult learners (with a fourth grade literacy level) prepared for her meeting at the Employment Office by formulating her own questions, writing them down on cards and then laid the cards down on her kitchen table and prioritized them. Think of what she was doing! She was writing. She was formulating questions. She was organizing written work. She was thinking strategically. All that from being inspired by the Question Formulation Technique.
Nashua, NH: The Nashua Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been particularly successful in using RQP in their Family Empowerment Project. The ALC has shared our method for teaching advocacy skills with staff members, who have then shared it with colleagues and participating families. Many of the families are now interacting more effectively with the programs and services that directly affect them. For example:
Family Empowerment Project participants had questions about how the Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) was conducting their assessments and asked the local DCYF supervisor to meet with them to answer their questions.

Introduction The 21 st Century is here. More and more, the literate citizen is expected to use technology to access, analyze and communicate information by knowing how to manage electronic information from an ever-widening array of resources and in a wide variety of formats. One must be proficient in using a variety of technology tools to solve problems, make informed decisions, and generate new knowledge. And the development of these skills is the responsibility of the schools and their instructional staff. Yet many of our educators lack the necessary skills themselves to be comfortable in playing a leadership role in the integration of technology into Connecticut’s classrooms. In fact, the role of the classroom teacher needs to change significantly as technology is used in a more widespread manner in instruction. The following chart highlights these changing responsibilities and opportunities.

    Child Support
By Susan K. Smith, Attorney at Law
Published: July 17, 2004 Child support is calculated using the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines (CSG). Conn. Gen. Stat. §46b-84 (Aug. 1999). Under the guidelines, the amount of total support is calculated and then each parent's portion of the total support is calculated pro rata according to their respective incomes. The Guidelines provide that judges have the discretion to deviate from the guideline amounts in certain specified situations. For instance, the Court may take into consideration a) the educational needs of the parents; b) the needs of other children supported by the non-custodial parent; c) extraordinary visitation expenses; and d) whether a deviation should be allowed due to shared or split custody situations. The Guidelines provide that the parents shall also share unreimbursed medical expenses and work-related day care costs. These expenses are shared pro rata according to income after adding in the child support paid to the receiving parent.

NICHCY is pleased to connect you with resources on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for children with disabilities.
When a child receives special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), he or she must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This is a written document listing, among other things, the special educational services that the child will receive. The IEP is developed by a team that includes the child's parents and school staff. The IEP is an extremely important document in the educational lives of students with disabilities receiving special education under IDEA. The resources we've listed below will help you learn more about IEPs-what the law requires, what information a typical IEP contains, how IEPs are developed, and so on. The list isn't exhaustive of the resources available on IEPs. It's a

Highlights This Week (September 12 - 18):
Components of Effective Reading Instruction
There is no single "best" program for teaching reading. However, scientific investigators agree about the need for instruction to address certain key abilities involved in learning to read. The importance of different reading-related abilities tends to shift somewhat with grade level and stage of development in reading; the abilities needed to be a successful middle- or high-school reader are not exactly the same as those required for success in first grade. Many authorities also agree that certain qualities can help to make reading instruction more effective with most youngsters, although students with learning disabilities in reading may have some special instructional needs Click here to read this month's article on Components of Effective Reading Instruction Check out these LD OnLine articles about Reading Instruction
