Read 3 CT in Connecticut towns Below is a list of all 169 Connecticut towns and cities. See the population in your
town and how many babies were born in your town in 1995 (44,388 babies were
born in our state that year). Why for 1995? When we started posting the information (1997), the most up-to-date report
was the 1995 Connecticut Registration Report , published July 1997. A more recent report is
now available, but it would take hours and hours and hours to update 169 web pages and all
we need is a general idea of the number of newborns in each town. What we have does
provide a general idea. These webpages are the only way for us to communicate (cheaply) across the state. Encourage
people who have never "surfed the net" (including people who don't use the computer) to access

86. Connecticut Towns In The Order Of Their Establishment
From Windsor (settled in 1633) to West Haven (incorporated in 1921), a list of the 169 cities and towns in the state, with significant dates, origin of name and Indian name.
http://www.sots.state.ct.us/RegisterManual/SectionVII/townorder.htm
CONNECTICUT TOWNS IN THE ORDER OF THEIR
ESTABLISHMENT; WITH THE ORIGIN OF THEIR NAMES As Indian was not a written but a spoken language, its spelling is often a matter of astonishing versatility. Because of mutilation of the Indian names by Colonial scribes and by the Colonial pronunciation it is frequently impossible to arrive at any definite conclusion with regard to the original meaning. The variety of dialects, even in the Algonquin tribe, varied greatly, even among those living within thirty or forty miles of one another. This added greatly to the complications of spelling Indian words in English. To add to the confusion, the white men continually applied Indian names to features of the landscape that were not at all in the Indian mind when they coined the word. Thus a word meaning a hill might be applied by the white men to all the surrounding territory and come eventually to mean a pond. And so the Indian names, or their Indian approximates, have come down to us not in the names of the towns, which the white men were creating in the tradition of their own race, but in features of the countryside streams, mountains, hills and other natural aspects. THE COLONY . Windsor , settled by a company from Plymouth Colony, arriving with the frame and materials of a trading house on their vessel Sept. 26, 1633. This house was set up, 80 to 100 rods below the mouth of the Farmington River, on a tract previously bought of the original Indian proprietors. Before the summer of 1635, the settlers had bought Great Meadow, north of the Farmington, and placed cattle and servants on their lands. They sold out, 1637 and 1638, to Dorchester, Mass., settlers, who had arrived in their vicinity, 1635, and named their settlement Dorchester. It was named in 1637 from Windsor in Berkshire, now a royal residence.

Escape From Connecticut's Cities
The Hartford Courant April 8, 2001
Bruce Katz
Director Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy
Bruce Katz Yet cities in Connecticut do not just face a fiscal crisis; they have a deeper crisis rooted in market irrelevance and social isolation. The city of Hartford is a case in point. The city lost an incredible 13 percent of its population in the 1990s, the largest decline of any town in Connecticut. According to the census, Hartford lost more people in the 1990s than New London, New Haven, Groton and Bridgeport taken together. As people go, so do jobs. Between 1992 and 1997, Hartford lost 11.5 percent of its job base. Its suburbs, by contrast, grew by 3.3 percent. The ESPN exurban campus in Bristol is typical of the "exit ramp" economy that now dominates Hartford's metropolis. As jobs move out to the fringe, the people left behind are disproportionately poor. Hartford's poverty rate in 1990 was 27.5 percent, one of the highest of any city in the country. According to 1997 IRS data, 26.4 percent of the taxpayers in the city qualify as "working poor" compared to 8.8 percent in the region as a whole. See also Brookings research on smart growth The implications of concentrated poverty are severe. People in these neighborhoods often face a triple whammy: poor schools, weak job information networks and scarce jobs. The neighborhoods themselves send strong signals to people and businesses: If you have the resources, get out and stay away.

For the past 300 years, Connecticut cities have thrived and declined, provided opportunity and engendered poverty, dazzled us with their beauty and been torn apart in the name of progress. And right from the beginning, cities in Connecticut have inspired ambivalence in a populace wedded to the concept of independent town government. Connecticut and Its Cities is the newest documentary in The Connecticut Experience series co-produced by Connecticut Public Television and the Connecticut Humanities Council. Producer/director Karyl K. Evans and historian/writer Jeremy Brecher, who won Emmy Awards for African Americans in Connecticut: From Civil War to Civil Rights, have teamed up again to create Connecticut and Its Cities, a stimulating program on cities that brings a fresh perspective to Connecticut’s urban issues. Co-produced by CPTV and

The documentary’s first part, Connecticut and Its Cities: Three Centuries of Change, provides a fascinating - and long overdue - look back at our state’s urban history. In the 17th century, Connecticut was a rural society with a few small villages. These villages were often founded by like-minded religious groups who left Boston for the fertile land of the Connecticut River Valley. For the most part, these Puritans of English heritage displaced the Native Americans, creating towns run by the authority of the colonial government.

http://www.cslib.org/probate/
Research Guide to Connecticut Probate Districts
The extensive system of probate courts in Connecticut often presents a challenge for Connecticut genealogical and historical researchers. Unlike other New England states where one probate court per county, often located in the county seat, is typical, the probate courts in Connecticut historically catered to much smaller geographic areas. Connecticut's probate courts evolved, both in number and in area of coverage, over the past 350 plus years. Currently 130 different probate courts serve Connecticut's 169 cities and towns. Connecticut probate records appear in two forms: estate paper packets, which are the original records submitted to the court, and probate court record books, which are the official record of the court. This research guide identifies which probate court (or district) covered a given Connecticut city or town at a given time; what probate materials (estate papers or record books) of a specific court are available; and in what format (original or microfilm) the materials are available for use at the Connecticut State Library. The guide will familiarize researchers with the Connecticut probate courts but is not a searchable database of individual names. For individual names, please see the "Probate Estate Papers Index" located in the History & Genealogy Reading Room at the Connecticut State Library.
