    • The Berlin Board of Education has given the superintendent authority to hire teachers without prior approval of the board. The rationale behind the new policy is to give the superintendent the ability to fill a teaching position quickly. [Source: New Britain Herald, April 13, 2001]
    • The Branford Board of Education voted in June 2001 to pursue a proposed full-day kindergarten program. The plan is to phase in the full day classes over five years starting in the 2002-03 school year. Currently, there are morning and afternoon sessions held in all three of the town’s elementary schools, [Source: New Haven Register, June 26, 2001]
    • Sacred Heart University in Bristol began offering a satellite program to give local teachers an opportunity to obtain an administrator’s certificate. All participants are matched with an administrator mentor and are required to complete internships. [Source: Hartford Courant, March 27, 2001]
    • In the Lyme – Old Lyme school district (Region #18), the Board of Education approved changes to the kindergarten and high school schedules. A full day kindergarten program will be offered as an alternative to half-day sessions. Staffing will not change. In the high school, the length of the school day increases by 11 minutes, with the school day starting five minutes earlier and ending six minutes later.     Recordkeeping/Reports Private schools must file student attendance reports and "such reports and returns concerning the school . . . as are required from boards of education concerning the public schools. . . ." No report concerning finances is required. Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-188. Instruction in English: Teacher Certification: Curriculum: Connecticut parents have the duty to instruct their children or cause them to be instructed in reading, writing, spelling, English grammar, geography, arithmetic, and United States history and in citizenship. Instruction may occur outside the public school if "the child is elsewhere receiving equivalent instruction in the studies taught in the public schools." Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-184. Special Education: Health: Children enrolled in nonpublic schools must be protected by adequate immunizations against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polioneyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, and hemophilus influenza.
