Educational Programs That Work - 1995
Public and Private School Collaboration
Public and Private School Collaboration. A program for students in grades 10 and 11; the Connecticut Scholars Program. A collaboration for the purpose of providing an opportunity for advanced residential study for academically promising urban school students. Description Public Private School Collaboration makes connections and makes connections work. Where public and private schools have not traditionally joined forces, they do so within a collaborative framework. This allows them to apply their finest resources to meet significant needs. It also allows them to gain the support of leading corporations and foundations as well as research institutions and museums as they seek to respond to those needs. Importantly, a collaboration does not have to involve a boarding school, urban schools, or huge foundation grants. It does require the full participation of public and private school partners, definition of genuine need, and the commitment to work together to find and apply resources to meet that need. After three and a half years, adoptions are now under way from Maine to California. They can be found in boarding schools, urban public high schools, day schools, elementary schools, and more. Winston Churchill once said that opportunity seeks not a "seat but a springboard." That is just what this program supplies.

Determining the Facts
Reading 1: Prudence Crandall and the Canterbury Female Boarding School
In the fall of 1831, the residents of Canterbury, Connecticut, approached 27-year-old Prudence Crandall about opening a private school for young women in their community. Crandall accepted the invitation and paid $500 as a down payment to purchase the recently vacated Paine mansion located on the town's green. Having been educated at the Friends' Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and having taught at local district schools, Crandall came to the position with a fine reputation as a teacher. The Crandall family, Quakers from Rhode Island, moved to south Canterbury when Prudence was young. The Canterbury Female Boarding School enjoyed the complete support of the community and was soon a success. Subjects taught included reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, history, chemistry, astronomy, and moral philosophy. Basic tuition and room and board cost $25 per quarter. Students paid extra fees for instruction in drawing, painting, music, and French. With student tuition, Crandall was able to pay off the $1500 mortgage within a year. At the time Crandall opened her school in Connecticut, white and African-American children received a free elementary education at the district schools. No further public or private education was made available to black children. Crandall became aware of the injustices to African Americans in Connecticut and elsewhere through her housekeeper Marcia Davis, and Marcia's friend Sarah Harris, both African Americans. Sarah's father was the local distributor of the abolitionist newspaper

Stamford, Connecticut
Registration Sheet October 1985 I ntroduction In April 1855 Kate Akin, a 27-year-old Quaker school teacher from Cape Cod moved to Stamford to become principal of the Stamford Female Seminary, a recently chartered private day and boarding school for girls. First located on Henry Street, the school was backed by a group of prominent local residents. During her 41-year tenure as principal and then proprietor of the seminary, Catharine Aiken, as she was known in Stamford, became one of the city's leading lights. Locally, she elevated the arts and founded several women's voluntary organizations. Nationally, she became known as the author of articles and two books on a system of mind training, based on intense concentration. She had developed the system while educating over 3,000 young women at Stamford. Catharine Aiken endeavored to provide her students with an education comparable to that offered at the best private schools in the northeast. Mathematics, science, history, philosophy, English, classical and foreign languages and literature were all included in the curriculum, as well as music, art and physical training. Young men who attended the Betts Academy in Stamford had a similar course of study. The two schools were largely responsible for the good reputation of Stamford's private schools during the 19th century.

In the Spotlight
by Susie Shellenberger
She’s an only child and grew up in a single-parent home. She gave her heart to Jesus during Sunday school when she was just 5 years old. And she’s the first generation American in her family. (Her mom and grandmother moved to the United States in the ’70s after living in Trinidad and Tobago.) Her name is Renelle Richardson, and she won the Miss Connecticut title just one year ago — at the age of 18. Know what else is special about Renelle? She’s one of you! That’s right. She read Brio throughout her middle school and high school years and still receives it as a 19-year-old college student. "I’m still a Brio Sis!," Renelle says. "In fact, I’ve had a Brio pen pal for six years. We’ve never met, but we correspond often." Her Brio pen pal, Andrea Fiskness, from Osakis, Minn., says, "I was ecstatic to see Renelle on TV! Even though she wasn’t crowned Miss America, she wears a much more important crown — the crown of life. Her relationship with Christ just exudes her being. I’m so proud of her. During the six years we’ve been pen pals, it’s always been obvious that Jesus dominates her life." The Brio staff thinks it’s pretty cool that one of you not only became Miss Connecticut . . . not only competed in the Miss America Pageant on national TV . . . but also openly shares her faith in Christ wherever she goes!

Being an Educator
is
Connecting Parent to Child
This reflection and analysis of my educational purpose comes from my own vivid educational experiences. Education was crucial in my family. My parents sacrificed for their children's education. Both my parents earned a doctorate. Both of my parents were professors. Because of this they were very much involved in my education and schooling.
One of the many goals and purposes of education is to connect the child with his/her community of which family is a part. Schools tend to separate children from families. Early educational thought held that schools were going to rescue children from their parents. Schools are social institutions which do not practice good social skills when it comes to dealing with their student's parents. Parents are considered the enemy in their own children's education by too many school systems.

Maybe not in England, but in Connecticut, the public schools strive to provide programs to meet the needs of all students, whether or not they are famous wizards. Let’s look at some of the differences between Hogwarts, that school of wizardry and magic, and our public schools. Sure, Hogwarts is a good school, but it isn’t for everyone. Its enrollment consists of young students who may have an aptitude for magic. Hogwarts is an elite school, for elite students. Our public schools are open to all, from every race and religion. They cannot discriminate against students because of disability, ability, aptitude or even lack of magical powers. Any muggle (ordinary student) can attend our schools at no cost and be guaranteed a public education until they complete high school. In order to attend Hogwarts, students must catch a train at Gate nine-and three-quarters at the London terminal and then travel hours up to the school, where they receive room and board.

Appeal of MANMOHAN LAMBA from action of the Board of Education of the Mineola Union Free School District relating to transportation. Decision No. 12,890 (February 25, 1993) SOBOL, Commissioner.Petitioner appeals from the determination of respondent board of education denying his request that respondent transport his son between their home and a nonpublic school during the 1992-1993 school year. The appeal must be sustained. On March 10, 1992, petitioner's son was admitted as a boarding student to a private school in Windsor, Connecticut. In late April 1992, the school informed petitioner that unless the expected attrition of students occurred, it might be unable to provide board for his son because the school was overenrolled for boarding admissions. In August 1992, the school advised petitioner that it was unable to admit his son as a boarder because of the overenrollment. Petitioner then enrolled his son in another private school, The Portledge School, located in Locust Valley, New York. Petitioner contacted respondent's transportation office and requested that respondent provide transportation for his son. Respondent declined, pursuant to Education Law
