Meadow Mari Conjunctions Many of Meadow Mari's conjunctions have been borrowed from other languages such as Russian. Conjunctions can be used to links nouns, phrases, clauses and whole sentences. They don't decline, conjugate and must link two or more members of the same class (nouns, phrases, clauses, etc.). They can be divided up into three different types: co-ordinating , correlative and subordinate conjunctions.
Co-ordinating Conjunctions
Co-ordinating conjunctions link two independent clauses to each other and show that the two things are inclusive (X and Y), are exclusive of each other (X or Y), or contradistinctive to each other (not X but Y).
  • and; but (everywhere but between nouns)
  • and (only between nouns)
  • therefore, consequently, thus

Prepositions and conjunctions
To link words we also need some other elements in the sentence whose job is to join the different sections (words, phrases and clauses) to one another. We have two types of words whose function is to provide these links; Prepositions and Conjunctions. Study Tip What are prepositions? They are words used to attach a noun or a pronoun to the elements which precede them. The type of link must be there to subordinate one part to the other. They give information about where something or someone is in relation to somebody or something else within time or space: in front of, after, before, with, to, for, thanks to etc.

Grammar
Morphemes and Parts of Speech
There are eight types of morphemes in Gladilatian, nouns, adjectives, relatives, conjunctions, prepositions, attributes, states, and suffixes. Of these, all but suffixes are considered parts of speech. A suffix is considered a converter which changes an occurrence of a part of speech into a related occurrence of a possibly different part of speech. A noun, adjective, or relative can stand alone as a word. A conjuction consists of two or more words. Prepositions, attributes, and states are prefixes. Note that there are no verbs, although there is an implicit "to be" in every sentence. Thoughts expressed as verbs in English are treated a number of ways in Gladilatian. For "I build that," Gladilatian says, "I [am] the builder of that." For "It is changing," "It [is] a changing one." For "I see you," "I [am] the user of sight directed at you."
Nouns
Nouns correspond to English nouns and pronouns. Every Gladilatian sentence has at least two nouns (at least one in informal speech), and a Gladilatian sentence may consist of only nouns. An important noun to know is u , which is used as a general placeholder when the grammar calls for a noun but one is not really needed. If it is translated at all it is usually translated as something like "something".

The grammar of causal conjunctions
Rita Therkelsen Roskilde University mailto:rita@ruc.dk fordi, fordi at, siden, for and derfor based on the framework of (Danish) Functional Grammar. Taking into consideration the semantics of the conjunction itself , the distribution is related to the distinctions of the layering of the clause within Functional Grammar. The grammatical analysis accounts for why and how causal conjunctions in Danish contribute differently to building up an argument, and it would explain why some causal conjunctions allow a variety of speech act values and others very few or none at all. Semantically the causal conjunctions all signal factuality, and in argumentation fordi, fordi at, siden and for introduce the minor premise in an argument, derfor for The causal conjunctions are different as far as their distribution is concerned. Fordi and its structural variation, fordi at, and siden conjoin a subordinate clause and a main clause. The subordinate clauses introduced by fordi and siden fordi fordi only establishes causal relations between events.

The remaining chapters of this book will often employ grammatical terminology. If you are not familiar with (or need to be reminded about) such terms as the names of the parts of speech and the elements of the sentence, or such concepts as the phrase and the clause, read this chapter.
3.1. Parts of speech
The traditional parts of speech are functional categories (a noun names a thing, a verb expresses an action), but they are also grammatical categories: a verb, for example, is a word that takes a particular set of endings and comes at a particular place in a sentence or clause. The functional and grammatical categories do not always match neatly. In Modern English, as we know well, nouns can quite often be used as verbs, adjectives as nouns, and prepositions as adverbs: the parts of speech can overlap quite a bit. You will find that the same is true in Old English.
3.1.1. Nouns
