Conjunctions
One long-running debate regarding conjunctions is the use of words like and, but and or at the beginning of a sentence. Bernstein has this conclusion for us: Sentences beginning with "and", "but", or "or" are acceptable provided the practice is not overdone. Indeed, nothing that is overdone is ever acceptable, be it language or lamb chops. One very common error with the usage of the conjunctions although and but is illustrated below: Although/But Although these products are expensive but retailers have no problem selling them. Although these products are expensive, retailers have no problem selling them. These products are expensive but retailers have no problem selling them. Although these products are expensive, yet retailers have no problem selling them.

The Groups of Conjunctions
Conjunctions are auxiliary parts of speech. They are used to join words, parts of speech or sentences. Some conjunctions (da, tu, magram, kholo, etc.) join words as well as sentences. The group of conjunctions (rom, rodesats, rotsa, tu, ara, sanam, vidre, radganats, rata, rak'i, rogorts k'i, etc.) joins only sentences. 1. Coordinate Conjunctions join parts of speech or the sentences that are equal to each other.
These conjunctions are: da (and), tu (and, if, whether, or), magram (but), kholo (but, only), an (either), anan (eitheror), anu (or, that is), e.i. - abbreviated ese igi (that is, i.e.), khan, khankhan (sometimessometimes), gind, gindgind (eitheror), aramed (but), k'i araaramed (notbut), tund, tundtund (eitheror), agretve, aseve (also), ara mart'o (not only).
2. Subordinate Conjunctions join clauses of complex sentences. These conjunctions are: rom (because, in order to, that), imit'om rom (because), imis gamo, radgan, radganats (because), rodesats, rotsa (when, whenever), tu (if), tu ara (if not), sanam (before), vidre (as long as, until, up to, than), rogorts (as), vinaidan (because, since, for), imit'om rom (because), rata (in order to) rak'i (as, since), torem (else, if not, otherwise), titkos (as if), vidre (than), tumtsa (although, however), ase rom (so that), rotsa (when), rogorts k'i (as soon as).
Adding postposition ts to the interrogative pronouns transfers them into subordinate conjunctions.

What are conjunctions?
1. Conjunctions are used to join words or groups of words together. The most common ones are "and", "or" and "but". (There are others - see " Glossary of Terms ".) Often, a conjunction sits before the last item in a list.
Examples:
Jamie, Adam and Lee arranged to meet by The Bull at 7 o'clock.
(conjunction "and" groups "Jamie", "Adam" + "Lee")
It is a small but practical kitchen.
(conjunction "but" groups "small" + "practical")
The manager or his secretary will notify you when the report is ready.
(conjunction "or" groups "manager" + "secretary")
Conjunctions do not normally cause serious errors, but writers are sometimes confused about when to place a comma before a conjunction. Unfortunately, there is no simple rule, such as: Never put a comma before "and". (The guidelines are explained below and in Sections and
3. As a rule, do not place a comma before a conjunction when it sits before the last item in a simple list.

Conjunctions Courses Conjunctions or How to Eliminate Comma Splices
This lesson is about ways to join simple clauses into longer, more complex sentences that are clear and comprehensible. Coordinating conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so ) join two independent clauses. Place the conjunction between the clauses, and place a comma before it.
Grandmother lost her sight, but her hearing sharpened.
Note: A clause with a coordinating conjunction in front of it remains independent . That is, it is still a sentence. "But her hearing sharpened" is a perfectly correct sentence, regardless of whether it sounds beautiful or says much.
Subordinating conjunctions after, although, as, because, before, if, since, that, unless, until, when, where, whether; which, while, who, whom, whose ) also join clauses.
Grandmother's hearing sharpened because she lost her sight. Because Grandmother lost her sight, her hearing sharpened.
Note: A single clause that begins with one of these words is not a complete sentence. A subordinating conjunction magically transforms an independent clause into a dependent one, and dependent clauses are not sentences; they need independent clauses to lean on. "While her hearing sharpened" is a

Grammar Review
For most of us, the word "grammar" evokes painful memories of tedious exercises done many years ago while we were sitting on a hard seat and eagerly awaiting the bell. The subject matter is forgotten, and all we remember is the pain. Unfortunately, grammar is a foundation for further learning. Without it we would have no terms in which to describe and discuss language, and that's why this section has been included. I shall try to cover the topic as quickly and painlessly as possible while nonetheless conveying an explanation of all the grammatical terms used elsewhere in this guide. We'll briefly cover only the topics you need right now. Consequently, I have left out a great deal of information that you may wish to review in your pursuit of better writing skills. For that information, you may refer to Web pages posted by some genuine English teachers:
  • http://www.edufind.com/english/grammar/
In the way of a warning, real grammarians may have fits over some of the things I've said below. That's because I've ruthlessly simplified a topic that properly should consume many megabytes of disk storage, and could take years to master. To begin, we review the main parts of speech:
