e-mail From the May, 2003 issue of PC Alamode Magazine is a company from Canada that produces the Mia line of products. Mia is an animated talking mouse who wears pink overalls and likes to explore the world. She may or may not be familiar to our readers, but she already has a reading, math and science adventure published by Kutoka. The new and most recently released product is designed to let children explore their creative side with help from Mia and her sidekick, Scary, also known as "Boo". There are all kinds of ways to be creative with this software and I will attempt to show how useful this tool can be in this review. In order to run this software on your computer, you need to have at least a Pentium II class Celeron or better CPU, with 64 MB of RAM and a Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT or XP operating system. Video graphics needs to support at least 800 x 600, 24-bit True Color resolution and sound should be a 16-bit, SoundBlaster or 100% compatible card. For installation or to run the program from the CD, your CD-ROM speed should be at least 6X. A printer is recommended and I would strongly concur that to achieve the potential this program offers you will want to use a color printer with the program. The software is divided up into 5 separate sections; within each one you can express your individualism and artistic talent. Each time you make your first entry into a section, Mia appears and provides a synopsis of what to expect. You can also benefit from the Tutorial at the opening of the program, which demonstrates some of the useful tools that are ready and available for your use. Mia also gives you an example of some of the things you might create. If you tire of the Tutorial, or don't want to listen to any more of it, you simply hit the space bar to exit. One very effective feature is the help tool. When you are using the program, if you are not sure of what some of the tools are or how they work, you can hit the "?" icon and you will get an explanation (See Figure 1). If you click on the name associated with the tool, Mia will give you a verbal explanation of the icon.

This tutorial offers participants an introduction to evaluation methods and techniques that can be used to assess usability and fun, where the users are children . It also provides opportunities for hands-on experience of some of the methods with children.
Many evaluation methods have been devised, documented, and used successfully in situations where the intended users are adults. These methods include observational and survey methods that involve representative users, and methods such as walkthrough that do not involve users directly but assume a knowledge and understanding of their actions. Most of these methods need special approaches, if they can be used at all, when the intended users are children. In addition, most evaluation methods used with adults are concerned primarily with the usability of a product; with children, usability remains important, but evaluating fun is likely to also be a major concern.
The goals of participants in this tutorial will be:
  • To understand the roles a child can play in the evaluation process.

Overview
An informed parent is a child's best advocate! The Internet is a powerful tool that offers unprecedented access to educational resources as well as remarkable communication/collaboration opportunities. However, tremendous responsibilities accompany this potent force. Frequently, the technical aspects of this technology obscure the ethical issues. Teachers, parents and students ALL need to be involved in discussions about the complex issues involved with safety, censorship and netiquette.
  • Be active participants in your children's Internet experience.
Young children should not be surfing the WWW alone. Spend time with your children online. Encourage them to show you their favorite sites. Get involved with their online searches.
  • Set firm guidelines about computer and Internet use.
Child psychologists and safety experts recommend that the computer be in a common family area rather than the child's room. Set firm Internet safety rules. Discuss these guidelines with your children. Children need to know what you as a family consider off limits. Your family's values should extend to cyberspace.

    http://www.jerrypournelle.com/Reading.html
Mrs. Pournelle's Reading Program Mrs. Roberta Pournelle is rjp@earthlink.net and can answer specific questions better than I can. If you wrote me about her program I will have forwarded your mail to her. However, she gets a LOT of mail and it may be a while before she gets to it. You should also visit her web page at http://www.readingtlc.com . You can also order a copy from there. Her reading program was developed through over 20 years of teaching children to read, not solely from theories. The 'program' was originally a lesson plan with posters and acetate overlays, and used in classes of up to size 30 or so students, as well as for individual tutorials. It incorporated a number of features such as "uncover/discover" developed by Roberta and so far as I know unique to her program and those who have learned to use it. It has always been highly effective. It was subsequently made into a computer program tutorial guide. The 'program' has taught over 6,000 people (of all ages) to read. Some were upper middle class English speaking, others were inner city English speaking, many were English as second language non-English speaking; home languages included Spanish, Chinese, and Armenian. It has been used for adults who speak English, and is in use by American teachers in foreign countries teaching both children and adults who are simultaneously learning spoken English. The program teaches English only. It is not available in other languages. The instruction is in English. It is available in

Compare prices at WHAT'S NEW These go up to 7800! GeForce 7800s have hit the retail shelves here in Australia now. The 7800 GTX is the only card available so far - under various brands, but all made in the same factory, so if nothing in the bundle packages excites you then you should just buy based on price. The 7800 GTX is only available in a PCIe version, and offers around 1.2 times the performance of an AGP GeForce 6800 Ultra, for around 1.3 times the price. It's not much more expensive than a PCIe 6800 Ultra, though, so if that's what you were considering buying, you'd do well to get a 7800 instead. For little more than half the price of a 7800 GTX, though (less than half the price of the fanciest 7800 packages...), you can get a quite nice 128Mb AGP plain GeForce 6800, which is certainly not only half the speed of the 7800. Especially if you get one that can be converted into a
