Choosing Software for Children.
The growing number of children who use computers in school or at home has spurred interest in software for children which challenges their abilities and extends their understanding. Teachers and parents are asking what software is "good" and where to find it. SOFTWARE USE A first step in choosing children's software is to consider its purpose. Is it intended to entertain or to teach? To provide art or music experiences? To develop writing skills or programming skills? A second step is to determine how well the program succeeds in its goals. In any case, the effectiveness of any software will be influenced by the age and experience of the child using it. SOFTWARE CHARACTERISTICS AND PROGRAM FEATURES Good quality children's software can often be recognized by the presence of certain characteristics or program features. The questions below suggest what to look for in programs for children. Does the software contribute to children's comprehension of the world around them? Does it both foster and satisfy curiosity?

Technology for the Gifted and Talented. 1985 Digest.
In general, computers are used in the education of gifted children in three ways: in computer assisted instruction (including tutorials, games, and simulations), in developing thinking skills, and as tools for facilitating independent learning (including word processing and authoring systems). COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION (CAI) The role of computer assisted instruction in the education of gifted children is to develop decision-making skills and to foster independent learning. In CAI, the computer presents information, asks questions, and verifies responses in much the same way a teacher does. Unlike traditional means of instruction, however, CAI allows students to work at their own level and pace. This mode of instruction can be very beneficial to gifted students who often have interests and abilities that go beyond the scope of the regular curriculum. Drill and Practice Drill and practice programs provide students with practice using material already encountered. Because these programs cover various levels of many subject areas, they can be used for both remediation and acceleration. Gifted children do not necessarily excel in all areas; they may need help mastering some subjects. Drill and practice programs help to reinforce recently acquired knowledge and skills. For gifted students, the primary role of drill and practice programs is to help students who want to go beyond the lockstep curriculum acquire new skills.

If you are a parent, you probably have rules for how your children should deal with strangers, which TV shows, movies, and videos they're allowed to watch, what stores they're allowed to enter, and where and how far from home they're allowed to travel. It's important to make similar rules for your children's Internet use and to be aware of their online activities. If you are a child, using the Internet is like all of the other activities you take part in, and there are some basic rules that will help you get the most out of your Internet time.

Children in the Digital Age: Influences of Electronic Media on Development. Eds. Sandra L. Calvert, Amy B. Jordan, and Rodney R. Cocking. Westport, Conn: Praeger, 2002. 260p. alk. paper, $49.95 (ISBN 0275976521). LC 2002-19509. Children in the Digital Age is a collection of essays centered on the effects of interactive media on children. Editors Calvert, Jordan, and Cooking have collected an impressive group of contributors to fill the pages of this thought-provoking work. Children in the Digital Age also explores the demographics of access, expenditures of time, differences in gender behavior, and how online interactive environments such as MUDs and MOOs impact the development of identity in adolescents. The second section looks at what behavioral effects media has on children. It points to the fact that children need constructive and well-designed virtual environments where they can explore and develop their identity. The study of health resources on the Web, for example, points to the fact that adolescents have high expectations for the resources produced for them: Web-based resources need to incorporate high production values, include imbedded effects, and be designed to keep their attention.

Warning - The first batch of 22 computers were vintage 1984 models and that was
in 1995 when they were 11 years old. We had one teacher with experience on these machines attmpt to use them to teach old programming but even that failed and we had to get rid of all of them. The next batch circa 1996-97 were 386-486's which at the time did not sound too bad. After we went and kindly picked them up we found that RAM and other parts had been stripped off of most of them. The combined value at the time of these machines would have certainly been well under $2,000. The paperwork we had to sign to get them claimed the government was donating $13,000 worth of
    computers to our school district.

Introduction Korean is spoken in both North and South Korea by about 65 million people. There are also about 2 million speakers in China, 700,000 in Japan, and 600,000 in the United States. Korean's linguistic affiliation is uncertain, though in its grammatical structure it is most similar to Japanese. It is certainly not related to Chinese, although it has borrowed many Chinese words and has used the Chinese characters, together with the Korean alphabet, for many centuries. This latter practice was abolished in North Korea after World War II and is gradually being phased out in South Korea. In the fourth line of the poem above the proper nouns Yongbyon and Yag San appear with the Chinese characters following in parentheses.
