... Parenting and Family Tips Keep Kids and Teens Safe on the Internet (ARA) - Today's world requires us to be computer savvy, but for many, getting acquainted with a PC is a terrifying and frustrating experience.
Austin, Texas-based computer moms International offers its clients one-on-one computer and Internet training in their home or office to help ease the pressure. The rapidly growing company also helps families recognize hidden dangers on the Internet.
For several years, they have conveyed the need for an "adult designated driver" for every child and teen that uses online services. Computer moms asks schools to distribute Internet safety brochures to parents of elementary and middle school students to get them more involved in their kids' Internet activities.
"Whatever your age, the Internet is a wonderful tool," says Georgia Jones, founder of computer moms. "Unfortunately, it can also be a forum for people who exploit children and teens. Parents and kids need to be aware of its dangers and how to avoid them."
With the school year approaching, students soon will be browsing the Internet to research assignments and keep in touch with friends. The following is a list of general hazards kids and teens may encounter online:

In This Category... Budgeting Credit Cards and Debt Finance Personal Finance ... What is GAAP? Resources Home Free Tutorials Certifications Definitions ... Distance Education How Do I Teach My Children Fiscal Responsibility? by Learnthat.com Staff on Monday, November 01, 2004 The biggest answer to this question is, “Do not buy them everything!” If you want your children to understand that it is nott possible to purchase anything and everything, and that we must evaluate the importance we place on things to determine whether we truly “need” them, it is up to you to instill these ideas in your kids.
One way to do it is by giving them allowance. Many parents feel that they already buy their children so much that they can’t afford to give them allowance too. Well, definitely buy your kids the necessities…the things that meet their daily needs, like food, clothing, personal hygiene items, and school supplies. But then have your kids work by doing things like making their bed, doing dishes, or taking out the trash in order to receive their allowance. You may also want to include socially responsible actions in the criteria for receiving their allowance, by adding things like: help their sister with her homework, or hold the door for a person entering behind them, etc.
Once the kids have their allowance, you may want to get them TWO piggy banks. Then have them split their allowance in half. On goes in the piggy bank they use to save money (for college, a car when they are a teenager, whatever…they’ll do it if you tell them they need to), and the other half goes in the piggy bank they can spend. Plan a day, say every Saturday, that you will take your child to the store to spend what they have saved on toys. But do not let them pick something that costs more than what they have. Tell them they will have to save their money and add it to next week if they want that item. If you simply give them the extra money every time, then that defeats the purpose of the lesson.

Available Tutorials: A Step Towards the Creation of Educational Technology Standards: Identifying Key Skills In order to develop standards, we must first identify key skills which students will need in the future. It's not as easy as you think to ascertain the identity of these skills, because it's difficult to predict the future. Although, within the next ten years, the paradigm of workplace technology is sure to change. A Teacher's Guide To USENET USENET is a lot like the Internet: It is not exclusively owned by one person or group. Rather, it is a collection of computers all over the world sharing information electronically. When you post an article on USENET, it circulates around the world. Connecting through Technology A key tool for educators is to connect a new concept to prior experiences. As a bilingual educator with students of low SES, I quickly realized that their prior knowledge was limited. As I talked about different landforms and places I had seen, my students were either staring into space or completely off task. I soon realized that they could not make a visual connection to the content

Create Shortcuts for Commonly Used Programs.
Create shortcuts for programs that toddlers will frequently use and place these shortcuts on the desktop. To create a shortcut, find the icon that starts the program itself. Right-click it and choose “create shortcut.” This saves the shortcut icon in the same folder as wherever the program icon is located. Then drag this new shortcut icon to the desktop. Repeat this process on all programs that you want him or her to have access to. By the way, of course you can purchase “toddler software,” but right on the system are two great programs that you already have, that you should make shortcuts to: “word pad” and “paint.”
