Computer Science Research Index
This page is a top-level index to pages describing current research in computer science. It is intended to improve communication between different sub-fields and to prevent researchers from unnecessarily duplicating work. The early sections of this page contain resources that span all/most areas of computer science. At the end is an collection of pointers to specialized resources for individual sub-areas. Please send suggestions for improving this page to Margaret Fleck (mfleck@cs.uiowa.edu).

The UCSTRI Project
The Unified Computer Science Technical Report Index (pronounced as UCSTRI , rhymes with Spruce Tree ) project was designed to fix three problems:
  • I had too much free time
  • There did not exist an effective method for finding technical reports available online
  • There did not exist a service to immediately convince the most skeptical researcher that this WWW thing is worth thinking about
(Actually, the first of these was not ever really a problem anyway, but trying to do even minimal maintenance on this project should ensure that for the future.) To see the coverage of this index, a browsable sitelist is now available. The program actually uses a raw sitelist file which is understood by a perl program (the main code is here ; ask me if you really want the whole thing) to generate the index. I also have a TODO list of features to add if/when I get around to it. For the curious, at last count, there were over 6,000 TRs indexed from about 120 different FTP sites. I bothered to do stats on for the month of April, 1994; this service handled 18,275 queries from 4,510 different hosts during the month. Yow. I'm honored that this service received an honorable mention for the Best Professional Service in the 1994 Best of the Web Awards.

The Finnish Society for Computer Science
The Finnish Society for Computer Science was established in 1982 as a forum for researchers in the area of computer science and interested parties to meet, as well as for promoting computer science research, applications and the publication of research results. To this end, the society arranges discussions and courses for its members, carries out research, as well as broadcasting and publishing research results, and co-operates with other societies in the field, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, the society may participate in the arrangement of international symposiums and conferences, make presentations and propositions, as well as make statements and give out grants. The society's traditional activities include arranging the annual Computer science event, publishing the magazine Tietojenkäsittelytiede (computer science) and annually awarding prizes for outstanding theses. The society has c. 440 members, comprising researchers, teachers and students, IT professionals who are interested in computer science, and members from society and the world of enterprise. The society is a member of the Finnish Information Processing Association and the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies . The Finnish Information Processing Association belongs to the International Federation for Information Processing , IFIP. Several of the society members are active in technical committees and task forces in IFIP.

Welcome to the Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Science
Our mission is to provide engineers, scientists, and science and engineering students with resources for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in their work, and to serve those who are promoting learning and advancing the understanding of responsible research and practice in science and engineering. We occasionally sponsor conferences located in physical space, such as the International Conference on Ethics in Engineering and Computer Science in 1999. In other respects, the Online Ethics Center exists only in "cyberspace" and provides materials exclusively by posting them on these pages.
