181. The Horus Project
Reliable distributed computing research in Cornell University computer science department. Has information on Ensemble, a publicly distributed toolkit based on Horus research.
http://www.cs.cornell.edu/Info/Projects/HORUS/
The Company of the Gods rejoiced, rejoiced, at the coming of Horus, the son of Osiris, whose heart was firm, the triumphant, the son of Isis, the heir of Osiris.
The Horus project has developed a modular and extensible process-group communication system, addressing the requirements of a wide variety of robust distributed applications.
Horus, the son of Isis and of Osiris, was a god whose attributes appealed strongly to the Egyptians from one end of Egypt to the other, because in him every man and woman saw the type of what he or she wished to possess, that is to say, renewed life, and life as opposed to death, and movement as opposed to inactivity. Horus provides a framework for the development of distributed applications based on group communications , a style of computing that can arise in fault-tolerant systems, managed distributed systems, applications that exploit data replication or coherent caching, and groupware. Within the overall Horus framework a large collection of system and application protocols have been developed that allow the application designer to construct a communication module that exactly meets the application requirements at minimal cost. The Horus project was originally launched as an effort to redesign the Isis group communication system, but has evolved into a general purpose communication architecture with advanced support for the development of robust distributed systems in settings for which Isis was unsuitable, such as applications that have special security or real-time requirements. Besides the practical uses of our software, the project has contributed towards the theory of

CSDaily.com is a computer science news site aiming to provide useful information for computer science professionals, researchers, students, and instructors. Software Carpentry posted by tin on Friday August 26, @05:17PM
Some of my earliest memories are of my father working on carpentry projects. Thus I might be a bit biased towards the title of Greg Wilson's programming course for non-CS scientists, Software Carpentry . Having recently purchased a programming book for a non-programmer, I noticed that it did a reasonable job of covering the basics of the programming language but not so much about all the ancillary tasks that make up software development. Software Carpentry manages that in spades, trying to cover almost everything that you could find useful. Beginning CS students could find this useful, particularly those who are taught basics of programming languages, but receive no instruction on source control, building makefiles, and other tasks that are amazingly helpful but not absolutely essential for class work. It reminds me of the excellent Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual in that it covers every part of a project, from describing the tools to completion and maintenance.

UW Constraint-Based Systems
Welcome to the home page for the Constraints research group at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Washington A constraint is a relation that should be satisfied for example, that a line remain horizontal, that a resistor in an electrical circuit simulation obey Ohm's Law, or that one column in a web page table be at least twice as wide as another. Constraints have been used in a variety of languages and systems, particularly in user interface toolkits, in planning and scheduling, and in simulation. UW constraints research has been in several areas, including the design and implementation of constraint solvers, applying constraints to user interface construction and to simulation, and the design and implementation of constraint programming languages. The group is not currently active Alan Borning (the primary faculty member involved) has gotten distracted by the simulation of urban development but who knows; we might start up again sometime. There is certainly more to be done!

We have designed a number of constraint satisfaction algorithms over the years, including DeltaBlue, SkyBlue, Indigo, Ultraviolet (is there a pattern here?), and Cassowary (I guess not). For researchers interested in experimenting with such algorithms, we recommend Cassowary; for certain applications, DeltaBlue may be useful as well.

187. History Of Computing Science: Computer History From The Past
Lecture presented by Michelle A. Hoyle explaining how computers and computing science arose from using sticks with notches for counting, to the massive explosion of personal computers in the 1980s.

Introduction
Welcome to Calypso's Lecture Series for CS-100. The first (and only) lecture in the series is about the history of computing from the past to the present. This offers the student or casual browser an overview of the advances in science that made desktop computers possible starting with the invention of counting. This lecture was originally given in the fall of 1994 at the University of Regina (Regina, Canada) for 400 CS-100 students. CS-100 is an introductory course designed primarily for students from other disciplines. It was not intended for the computing science major student. As such, this material was geared to appeal to those students. Michelle A. Hoyle Future additions to the lecture include a section discussing the impact of business microcomputers and mainframes to the history of computing. Teachers , this lecture is available to be used on a standalone machine in a classroom. Drop me some mail if you would like a copy for use in a classroom, museum, or kiosk.
