Rural India's rough road to computer literacy

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack MUMBAI, IndiaBringing the benefits of computer technology to rural villages in India will require a substantial amount of workand a lot of extra car batteries, said professor Jitendra Shah. Shahwho works in the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, an organization that develops supercomputers herehas launched a computer program designed to alleviate the grinding poverty found throughout the country. In a pilot installation in a village near Mumbai, students use PCs, donated by Via Technologies , to perform geometry homework, while local women track their savings in a micropayment program. Later this month, college teachers from around India will take a three-week training course that will allow them to replicate the program in other regions. To save power, the PCs run on car and truck batteries. Unfortunately, the batteries regularly need recharging and the public electrical power system can't always handle the demand. Three weeks ago, the village transformer blew because too many people tapped into it illegally, a chronic problem here. The government refused to rebuild the transformer until the villagers promised to punish anyone who stole power. The day after it was rebuilt, the transformer blew again.

    Communication
"I suspect that Ong is correct that a new orality is emerging in the Electronic Age." -Robert M. Fowler, 1994
ith the continued emergence of new forms of electronic communication, speculation has increased about the future of human interaction and the ways in which the new media will influence that interaction. As with any new technology, wild predictions are being made and only time will tell which are accurate. There are, as well, those who are determined to believe that the new technology can only work to the detriment and not the betterment of mankind. Somewhere between these two extremes lies the truth about the future of computer-mediated communication (CMC). As yet we can only speculate on the ways in which the new technology will change our lives. What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that much of what is being touted as the "information revolution" has very strong ties to past structures of communication such as
    rality and literacy.

There seems to be clear and widespread agreement among the public and educators that students need to be proficient computer usersstudents need to be "computer literate." However, while districts are spending a great deal of money on technology, there seems to be only a vague notion of what computer literacy really means. - Can the student who operates a computer well enough to play "Doom" be considered computer literate? - Will a student who has used computers in school only for running tutorials or an integrated learning system have the skills necessary to survive in our society? - Will the ability to do basic word processing be sufficient for students entering the workplace or post-secondary education? Clearly not. In too many schools, most teachers and students still use computers only as the equivalent of expensive flash cards or electronic worksheets. The productivity side of computer use in the general content area curriculum is neglected or grossly underdeveloped (Moursund, 1995).

Using a Computer for Literary Analysis

    by Laura Kramarsky
The University of Texas at Austin Currents in Electronic Literacy
  • Much of the recent discussion about the uses of computers in education has revolved around the changes technology can make in composition and the ways it can facilitate discussions in literature classrooms. Relatively little attention, however, has been directed toward the prerequisite for stimulating classroom discussions: research. Practically speaking, we need to explore theories ourselves before we can teach them. Can we use computers to analyze literature in ways for which more traditional means will not suffice? I would answer with an unequivocal "sometimes." In some instances, working on a computer can be very similar to working without one: taking notes in a word processing program mirrors taking them on notecards, for example. While there are differences between composing notes on a word processor and on cards, writing down thoughts and organizing them are processes familiar to us from traditional research methods. Indeed, many of the programs designed especially for research seem to have been designed with the belief that the computer is a tool that increases efficiency without substantially altering output. There are times, however, a question would be impossible to answer, a theory impossible to prove, a concept impossible to flesh out without digital assistance (or enough note cards to decimate a small forest, a stadium-sized floor to arrange them on, and a visual memory as complex as a medieval monk's).
