The specifications are ideal for multi-tasking users who run several applications at once.
For fourteen years, CBIL has administered an annual computer literacy survey a written questionnaire, to incoming medical students. The survey's purpose is to assess the students' levels of knowledge, skill and experience with computer technology. This information allows CBIL to plan educational activities that address deficiencies in computer knowledge (such as students having little experience with computer literature searching), and to reconfigure hardware (such as pursuing wireless connections) in response to student needs.

Most Colleges and Departments provide access to general computing resources, which include word-processing, desktop publishing, data processing, access to the Internet, membership of newsgroups and email. The use of these resources should be encouraged in the synthesis and presentation of work (e.g. writing of reports, collation and analysis of data, database and spreadsheet management). Formal training in the use of computers is provided by some Colleges and Departments (for particular specialised packages) and by the University Computing Service. Many Departments place teaching material to supplement the lectures on their websites.

103. Computer Literacy, Computer Skills, And Computer Use In Schools And Small Busine

Computer Literacy, Computer Skills, and Computer Use
in Schools and Small Businesses.
From the personal experiences of
Duane Bristow
July 27, 1997
People have many misconceptions about the uses and misuses of computers in business and in schools. Although many people are now using computers in their daily lives, both at home and on the job, many small businesses and most schools are not using them efficiently and, in many cases, are misusing computers and related technology. Although computer systems, if properly implemented, can be very useful in increasing efficiency, they can decrease efficiency just as much when improperly used. I define efficiency as use of a computer system to accomplish well defined goals with less expense than before in terms of time and money. If use of computer systems either prevent reaching goals or make reaching goals more expensive or more time consuming than before, then I consider that misuse of computers. The fundamental point that is often overlooked or under emphasized is that use of computers is not itself a goal but that computers are tools to be used to accomplish objectives usually unrelated to the computer itself.
Computerizing Small Businesses
I have computerized nearly 200 small businesses and trained probably 300 to 500 people to use these systems. Some of my customers have been using my computer systems continuously for up to fourteen years. At one time my area of south central Kentucky probably had more businesses computerized for the size of the community than any in the state and probably than most in the nation. Now, of course, computers are common in small businesses here and elsewhere, although I have installed and do maintain most of the local business computer systems.

This is not a test or a quiz. It is general self-assessment tool which aims to show you whether you already have the desired level of computer literacy to give you the best possible start in IT45 Master of Information Technology or IT70 Master of Information Management (or any of the related Graduate Certificate programs). As a student in one of these postgraduate courses, it is assumed that you will understand general IT terminology and be competent in working in the Windows environment and using software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel etc. You also need to be comfortable working in an online environment to surf the Internet and to send and receive emails. While the courses themselves will certainly help you develop higher levels of knowledge and skills in these areas, it is important that you enter the course with a degree of competence. We know it is important that you get the most of your studies at QUT, so this self-assessment tool can point out areas of potential improvement that will make your life as a postgraduate student a little bit easier.

Most of these companies require you to have advertising on your site (so its not really free...) but for your first site, this is a good way to go in order to keep costs low. Also, there is usually a size limit for your website (usually around 3.0 MegaBytes) which is something to keep in mind while designing your site. Search Engines Search Engines are used my millions of online users every day. People use search engines in order to sort through the billions of web pages currently on hte web in order to find the ones they are looking for. NGOs can use search engines to find information or other gorups related to their own organizations, or make thier own website and data more accesible to the general public by registering their own site with the engine. When the site is registered, then it will show up in the lists of search results generated by the engine. Email Electronic mail is the fastest, cheapest way to communicate with long distance associates. The Internet contains hundreds of free web-based email companies that allow you to send and recieve mail from anywhere in the world. There are also free downloadable email programs that allow you to store large amounts of information on your computer as well (such as Eudora). Your Child and Computer Literacy
by Darryl Reiter

The number of hours a child spends in front of the television has declined for the first time in years. One of the main reasons is the Internet, and the other is computer games. Children are spending more time in front of the computer than the TV, and that's a fact. Does your child seem to know more about using a computer than you? Probably. Does that make your child computer literate? Probably not. Before you try to assess the computer competency of your child, think about what "computer literacy" means. Is it the ability to talk techno-speak and impress (or even scare) parents? Is it the ability to operate a computer and run applications to complete a task? These are simple definitions in a domain that has an incredibly varied set of skills and applications.
Perhaps we should look at computer literacy as the ability to apply computers and related technology to thinking critically to solve a problem, creating a solution and ultimately producing a product. That product may be a document, a presentation, a device or some other outcome. There is an old theory that has recently regained the right to be discussed seriously called "Multiple Intelligences". One of the biggest proponents of this theory is Howard Gardner, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Darryl Reiter is an educational consultant specializing in the application of technology in elementary and junior schools in Toronto. He resides in Toronto and has just opened The Children's Technology Workshop, a HANDS ON Applied Technology Project Centre in Leaside. You can learn more about the Children's' Technology Workshop at

In an increasingly computerized society, computer literacy, the ability to understand and use computers, is very important. Children learn about computers in schools, and many have computers at home, so they are growing up computer literate. Many adults, however, have only recently come into contact with computers, and some misunderstand and fear them.
