Beyond Computer Literacy:
Implications of Technology for the Content of a College Education
By Stephen Ehrmann Computers and the Internet already play several important roles in liberal education.
  • Computer literacy and fluency : the ability of students to use computers and the Internet as tools for general purposes Effectiveness: the use of technology to foster faculty-student connections, student-student collaboration, active learning, and other practices that can improve outcomes Access: the use of technology to support programs and practices that are fully available to nontraditional learners who would otherwise be unable to enroll and excel
  • All three of these applications are well established and growing. Now there's another application of technology to liberal education to consider:
  • Content: Computers and the Internet, as they're used in the larger world, have implications for what all college students, by the time they graduate, should have learned from their majors as well as from general education requirements. These implications go far beyond computer literacy.

Sugata Mitra has a PhD in physics and heads research efforts at New Delhi's NIIT, a fast-growing software and education company with sales of more than $200 million and a market cap over $2 billion. But Mitra's passion is computer-based education, specifically for India's poor. He believes that children, even terribly poor kids with little education, can quickly teach themselves the rudiments of computer literacy. The key, he contends, is for teachers and other adults to give them free rein, so their natural curiosity takes over and they teach themselves. He calls the concept "minimally invasive education."

    Introduction
In today’s rapidly changing society and workplace, it is more important than ever for a citizen and/or employee to understand the technology around them. The College of Southern Idaho believes that this knowledge and skill set is of primary concern to any CSI graduate. The Computer Literacy Assessment (CSA) is our way of validating that all graduates meet a fundamental level of computer literacy. This graduation requirement supports the mission of the college: The College of Southern Idaho, a comprehensive community college, provides educational, social and cultural opportunities for a diverse population of South Central Idaho. In this rapidly changing world, CSI encourages our students to lead enriched, productive and responsible lives. top of page History of Computer Literacy @ CSI In 1999, the CSI strategic planning group suggested the necessity for a computer literacy graduation requirement. Shortly after the need was identified, a Computer Literacy Committee was developed and asked to design the system by which Computer Literacy would be defined and how to assess student literacy prior to graduation. This committee was originally chaired by Dr. Mark Sugden and consisted of various campus and community representatives.

Please be careful, as September is the most dangerous month to be on the roads around UMass (students who don't know their way around, and/or who haven't had much experience driving). If you are a driver, you must stop at the crosswalks to let pedestrians cross the street (why did the UMass student cross the road?), and if you are a pedestrian don't just jump out in front of cars and expect them to stop.

For over fifty years, beginning with the famous ENIAC, a revolution has
been taking place in the United States and the world. The personal computer has
changed the way many people think and live. With its amazing versatility, it
has found its way into every area of life, and knowing how to operate it is a
requirement for today's world. Those who have not taken the time to learn about
computers often do not even know what to do once one has been turned on, and
this problem should be corrected. That is why all high schools must make a
computer literacy course a requirement for graduation.
Although a computer course would take away two or three periods of a high school student's weekly schedule, it will be well worth it in the real world. With so many careers today involving a knowledge of a computer's basic functions, computer literacy plays a big part in job security. If a potential

For all citizens, ICT has been found to be beneficial as ICT can provide solutions to the various needs of the citizens. For citizens to get the maximum benefits from these projects they need to be computer literate. Certain groups are far less likely than others to have computers or online access. Lack of such access affects the ability of children to improve their learning with educational software, adults to acquire valuable technology skills, and families to benefit from them. This phenomenon is called digital divide. There is growing concern about the implications of ‘digital divide’, whereby some social groups lack the means to access new Information and Communication Technologies, while others reap labour market rewards for being on the cutting edge of these technologies.
