Computer literacy, the ability to use computers to perform a variety of tasks, is becoming fundamental to the learning process. The "information age" perhaps best describes the twentieth century; the next century has been described as the "information processing" age. A wide variety of computer skills are useful and, in some cases required, as an essential part of college learning and employment for most individuals. UMD offers many opportunities for learning these skills. In addition to the resources listed below, UMD offers opportunities for advanced computer study through computer science and electrical and computer engineering degree programs.
ASSESSMENT What is your ability to operate a computer Evaluate your ability to use e-mail and Internet to communicate and locate information Evaluate your word processing ability Assess your ability to create a worksheet using spreadsheet software? James Baldwin "A Talk to Teachers" In 1976 John Nevison coined the term computer literacy and unwittingly sparked a long, complex debate when he wrote: Because of the widespread use of elementary computing skill, there should be an appropriate term of this skill. It should suggest an acquaintance with the rudiments of computer programming, much as the term literacy connotes a familiarity with the fundamentals of reading and writing, and it should have a precise definition that all can agree on. It is reasonable to suggest that a person who has written a computer program should be called literate in computing . This is an extremely elementary definition. Literacy is not fluency" (Nevison 1976:401, italics in original). The "precise definition" that Nevison called for has yet to emerge from the voluminous debate on the topic and the discussion has become part of the much larger debates about equality in education and the "back to basics" movement. This discourse is and has been about two things: it is a debate about what the term "computer literacy" should encompass - how it should be taught - and a discussion of the value to US society of pursuing some kind of universal computer literacy. It seems as though every educator and education writer has some opinion about the so called "computer revolution," how it is going to reshape education and how to best bring that revolution into the classroom. The range of the debate runs from Nevison's original idea - computer literacy as programming ability - to the idea that quickly followed on it heels - the notion that programming ability is passe and what matters is the ability to chose and run applications.

    Edward R. Tufte
    Computer Literacy Bookshops Interview, 1994-1997
Prof. Tufte has long been one of our store's favorite authors, a writer whose intellect and books receive unanimous raves from those familiar with them. In one of the more unusual honors given him, The Utne Reader featured Tufte in a 1995 article '100 Visionaries Who Could Change Your Life', listing him with leading figures from politics, the media, and other walks of life. I've twice had the privilege of interviewing Tufte. The first time was in 1994, over sushi and sake, after a talk at our San Jose store in which he passed around his personal copy of an original Galileo manuscript. The second time was in January 1997, when his long-awaited third book came out (reviewed in this issue). I've meshed both interviews together for smoother 'flow'. - Dan Doernberg CLB: You speak of your work as "Information Design"... please tell us about that field. Tufte: The wonder of Information Design is that I can write a book in 1990 and the main intellectual hero is Galileo. What other field can make that statement?! That's the joy and wonder, a kind of miracle, of this field. There are all these things that are extraordinary in terms of content, and they are extraordinary in terms of their visual quality. Some of them are as beautiful as any painting, and they also happen to be about real things. Nobody had really seen that before. Both the incredible aesthetic, and the fact that the underlying frame is content-based.

Despite remarkable technological advances in some quarters and the resultant wealth and other opportunities this affords, the gap between the Internet haves and have-nots tends to be more of a chasm than a mere gap. More than 80% of people in the world have never ever heard a dial tone, surfed the Web, let alone received computer training.
