An online illustrated computer literacy course covering the material in a college course.

Computer Basics
Y ou don't have to know everything to be comfortable with computers. But there is a lot of information that will help you understand why things are the way they are... and how disaster can strike! "Knowledge is power!" So it's to your advantage to gather all the knowledge that you can. Besides which, computers are lots of fun - when they aren't driving you insane!!!
What's in these lessons?
The lessons in this Computer Basics section of Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101 explain a lot of the techno-babble that you hear about computers. The goal is to learn enough that you can follow along as computer technology becomes more and more important in our world. Consider this set of lessons "Beginning Driver's Ed" for the computer. What might be covered in a Driver's Education course in high school? How the engine works. Parts of the car. How to turn it on. How to shift gears. Rules of the road. Laws. Proper signaling. Lane changing. Basic maintenance. Changing a flat. Filling up with gas. Some clues on when "You'd better stop the car now!" The topics covered here will introduce you to a similar set of topics about computers. When you finish, you'll be just as prepared to "drive" a computer, as you were to drive a car when you finished Driver's Ed. Scary thought, isn't it? That clearly means you will need lots of practice with a skilled "driver" in the passenger's seat before you can be considered "safe on the road!" But we can get you started! But, really, you'll understand the basic ideas behind computers, some of the ills that affect computers, and some of the basic safety measures to take to keep your computer healthy. You'll gain some knowledge of how we got to today's computers and what lies ahead. It'll be great!

The World Computer Literacy Mission 2004 is drawing support from virtually all sections of society. Well known corporate giants have come forward to back the movement and obliterate the scourge of IT illiteracy. IDEA Cellular Ltd., one of the leading cellular operators in India, has launched a special NIIT-IDEA co-branded prepaid SIM card, to contribute towards the mega IT education exercise. The special prepaid SIM Card will be given to students registering for NIIT learning programs during the WCLD month.

Do you wish you had the time, and dollars, to take a real, live course on computers?
Then these lessons are for you!
E veryone picks up bits and pieces of information while using and working around computers. This can leave some pretty big gaps in your information landscape. These lessons are an attempt to fill in the missing pieces and to tie it all together. The "Illustrated" part means there will be lots of pictures. Other sets of lecture notes I have seen online are pretty much bare text. While the writing is often great, such text-only notes do not take advantage of the possibilities of web pages. So you will see some animations and graphics that enhance the text and, hopefully, make it clearer. This site is free for personal use. For other uses, please see the box below and the Permissions page. Most topics are available in both English and Spanish (español)

Stop Saying ``Computer Literacy''!
Brian Harvey
University of California, Berkeley [A version of this paper was published in Classroom Computer News in 1983.] As computers become more widely used in schools, educators have invented many different ways to use them. The different uses for computers are based on quite diverse models of what the purposes of computer education should be. One very common approach is based on the notion of ``computer literacy'': the idea that there is some basic familiarity with computers which all students need in order to compete in the job market, or to be informed citizens. The purpose of this paper is to question whether that notion is valid.
The Importance of Metaphor
Several educators have questioned the specific details of particular ``literacy'' plans, while accepting the overall concept. ``Computer literacy doesn't mean X,'' they say, ``it means Y.'' For example, Arthur Luehrmann says, ``[C]omputer literacy must also mean the ability to do computing, and not merely to recognize, identify, or be aware of alleged facts about computing.'' (Luehrmann, 1981) His argument is that a computer curriculum should give students actual programming experience, not just reading about computers in a book. But Luehrmann accepts the concept of computer literacy itself, the idea that there is something which every student must learn. He questions only the details of just what this something is.

COMP 1200, University of Memphis
Note to viewers: This web page is no longer an official part of the course. However, I knew a lot of people on the net liked it and used it, so I've kept it online. Please be aware that some of the information may be out of date; I haven't updated these notes since January 1997. I'm in the process of putting together a new site which will probably be named paulryburn.com; it will be up in Decmeber.
COMP 1200 Computer Literacy is a required course for many majors at the University of Memphis. No prior computer knowledge is required to enroll in the course. By the end of the semester, students will be familiar with both the hardware and software components of computer systems; they will also have an appreciation for the ways computers and society have changed each other.
This web page is an attempt by instructor Paul Ryburn to supplement the textbook and lab material. Hopefully it will aid COMP 1200 students; however, these notes cannot possibly duplicate the demonstrations and discussions that occur in the classroom. Students should not use this web site as a substitute for attending class. If you are browsing these pages from outside the University of Memphis, welcome! Although it is impossible to put all components of the course online, I have tried to arrange the Web pages so that anyone can learn quite a bit from them, whether taking COMP 1200 or not. If you're a prospective college student, why not take a look at the
