I have always had an interest in keyboarding. It is the primary form of input for computer today and it is still chiefly taught at the high school level. What about the students in the earlier 8 grades? What should they do while they are waiting to go to high school where they can learn how to type? Would you believe that there are actually courses at the secondary level entitled "Keyboarding 2"? How long does it take to learn to type? Typing is important and everyone should be able to type at least 40 words a minute. This sort of speed allows the user to flow with a train of thought as it comes. It doesn't mean that 40 wpm will be attained in typing class, but if students are given a solid foundation in keyboarding, their speed will develop as they keyboard their ways through life. Does this mean that 8 year olds should type at 40 wpm? No. They should be provided with the basics of keyboarding and then learn to type faster than they can write (typically 11 wpm). This will allow them to have an efficient way to enter their thoughts and writings into a dynamic electronic format. Editing and revising are necessary for improving writing and are much easier to do in a word processor than on paper. You will find a number of articles below that can provide you with background research for making your own curricular decisions. I have also included software reviews, downloadable free/shareware software (remember that you usually pay what it's worth), and recommendations for the keyboarding hardware. This is not an exhaustive list of research and resources. PLEASE contact me with your suggestions and/or experiences concerning keyboarding.

Computers, Keyboarding, and First Grade Students A first grade teacher shares her successes using computers and educational software to teach keyboarding in her classroom.
By Kathy Gathers
live in a small town in Kansas and have taught first grade for 30 years. I have had a computer in my classroom for several years. My elementary school uses Macintosh computers. Each classroom has at least two computers. We also have a computer lab with 25 computers. My classroom has three iMacs and one Apple LCII for my students to use and I have one iMac for my own use.
During reading groups, computers are used as part of my daily centers. The children have approximately 20 minutes to use a variety of software. Choices include Kid Pix Deluxe, Sammy's Science House, JumpStart First Grade, Thinkin' Things Collection 1, JumpStart Typing, Math Rabbit, Reader Rabbit 1 and Reader Rabbit 2, and several other programs. Occasionally I have a project for my students to complete but mostly they have free choice. Sometimes they practice what we have learned in the computer lab.

Question
Should keyboarding be taught? If so, how?
Response
Hello, In response to your request for information on keyboarding instruction, we conducted a sample search of the ERIC database. Below we have appended our search strategy, 9 citations with abstracts, and directions for accessing the full text. These citations may represent an introductory, rather than exhaustive, search for information on your topic. If you would like to conduct your own free ERIC database searches via the Internet, please visit the ERIC Database Help pages for directions or go directly to http://www.eduref.org/Eric/adv_search.shtml to search. I have also attached some related resources that may be helpful. Thank you for using AskERIC! Professional keyboarding and computer training for individuals, schools, and corporations.
Easily monitor and document progress with our typing test materials or yours.
Number keypad training for the ten key improves efficiency and eliminates errors.
Adaptive lessons improve data entry skills and adjust automatically for each person. Ainsworth invented computer-based typing instruction over 25 years ago. Our original typing tutor software pioneered the interval timing and user modeling technology that eliminates looking at keys, assures correct fingering, and trains writing skills. We offer two complete software systems focusing on keyboard training and number keypad training Our exclusive Hands-On! software continuously monitors hand position during typing lessons or drills and warns instantly if hands are not on the home row keys. This eliminates the major reason people look at the keyboard when learning to type. Instead of covering the keyboard or using continuous finger diagrams and other visual distractions, our software avoids "home row" problems through better instructional design. Adaptive lessons measure individual dexterity and automatically set the pace of the lessons to match each person - from students with special needs to adults. The software senses these subtle differences and sets a pace that's ideal for each person. This allows anyone to learn to type accurately and well, at whatever speed is appropriate.

107. The 1989 Case Against Keyboarding

Keyboarding in Elementary Schools
Curricular Issues
Stephen M. Shuller
Computer Coordinator
Scarsdale, NY Public Schools August 1989 Introduction We are currently in the midst of a world-wide revolution, moving from the Industrial Age to an era in which information is the primary product (Toffler 1984). As information processing tools, computers are central to this revolution. The ability to interact with computers is an essential skill for the Information Age, one which our schools will need to address to prepare our students to meet the challenges of this fundamentally changed world. The educational reform movement of the 1980's has recognized the importance of computers in education. For example, A Nation at Risk (1983) calls for the high school students to:
    (a) understand the computer as an information, computation, and communication device; (b) use the computer in the study of the other Basics and for personal and work-related purposes; and (c) understand the world of computers, electronics, and related technologies. (A Nation at Risk 1983, 26)
Virtually every other reform proposal has included similar recommendations. The educational community has responded to the futurists' visions of the Information Age and the reformers proposals by working to integrate computers into the curriculum at all levels.
