Your Child Needs Keyboard Skills Today, But Maybe There is a Light at the "End of the Tunnel"

August 1997
Frank J. Dutko
Keyboarding is a skill for everybody these days. Gone are the days when "typing" was something for secretaries and writers. Students need to record their thoughts, write class papers and send e-mail messages to friends across town or across the world. Third grade is a good time to start teaching keyboarding skills. Children have the coordination necessary by then. Plus, they often have the desire to learn. For home teaching, buy one of the popular keyboarding CD ROMs available such as "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing". With encouragement from you and some self-motivation from your child, this may be enough to get started. Some schools include keyboarding in their computer curriculum. If this occurs, your child may be regularly practicing keyboarding drills. Be sure and ask what software is used and how the drills are made to be fun. Many children learn at after school enrichment classes. Look for an enrichment class that uses a variety of software programs, alternates accuracy drills with speed drills and gives students frequent encouragement to improve their skills. But maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. IBM recently began selling voice-recognition software called

KEYBOARDING CURRICULUM
Return to Instructional Technology Students in the Gilbert Public Schools will develop the essential keyboarding skills necessary to accurately and efficiently prepare a document. The success of any keyboarding program is measured by how students progress. Progress is measured by technique; i.e. correct position of body/hands, correct key stroking techniques (not looking at keys), speed, and accuracy. Students will practice proper keyboarding techniques whenever they are at the computer. Keyboarding is an important life skill. Gilbert Public Schools is dedicated to teaching competency in computer skills. Students will learn and be able to do the following: Kindergarten students will be introduced to various keys on the keyboard.
  • Begin using correct posture
    Recognize letter keys
    Recognize number keys
Introduce use of special keys (shift, return, caps lock option, shift/option, and delete)
Use both the right and left hand to select keys
First Grade students will continue to practice recognition and use of various keys
on the keyboard.

Wakefield LEA Pilot Evaluation - NEW Results just in! Bedford High School Report (Numeracy) Dear Terry and Robert Thankyou for the loan of your crazy table's maths game. This proved to be very successful. Over the past five days students attending our summer school 2003, where given the three and the nine times table to study. Students working individually at each task showed little motivation or enthusiasm and in some cases took too long to complete the work. However, when placed in pairs, to compete with each other, both moral and enthusiasm increased dramatically. Students were keen to learn and determined to beat their opponent throughout the week. At the beginning of the week the class average time for the three times table was 65 seconds, whereas the class average to complete the nine times table was 1 minute 45 seconds. All students showed significant improvement in both set tasks by the end of the week. The class average to complete the three times table improved from 65 seconds to 28 seconds. This is an increase by 57%, where as the class average to complete the nine times table improved from 105 seconds to 50 seconds giving an increase of 52%.

KEYBOARD CRAZY is an innovative new Game, which rapidly teaches pupils Keyboard Enhancement Skills, it has been PROVEN to make a significant contribution to the acquisition of keyboarding skills with pupils in Keystage 1-2 in Mainstream Schools and a variety of Keystage 1-3 pupils in special schools. With ICT playing a major part of the curriculum, now is the time to address the fundamentals, pupils need basic keyboard skills to enable them to key in their names and passwords and to access the software faster, thus gaining more time in actual ICT learning. Keyboard Crazy will enable pupils to become more efficient and more confident in their management of the computer keyboard. The Left and Right hand board is an extremely competetive way to encourage children to use their correct hands when typing and avoid cross-over. The more the game is used leads to increased typing speeds.
The University of Liverpool have carried out an extensive evaluation of Keyboard Crazy and they have stated that: There is a Pressing need for the game, as perceived by teachers working in schools. That it can benefit all schoolchildren within the age range of 5 - 11. The game fills a gap in the ICT Curriculum, it results in Higher speed of information processing, greater accuracy in the identification of the position of symbols on the keyboard and thus enables children to become more efficient and more confident in their management of the Computer Keyboard. They found that the games adaptability meets the needs of children right across the ability range, and that all of the children enjoyed playing it.

Full review This is worth buying, even if only to keep the kids quiet for a bit, and at only 29.89 (Argos, p972), not that expensive either. My son James,2, was brought this for his first birthday by a relative, when I seen it, I thought, no way will he stay interested for long enough, let alone actually play with it, but he loves it, in fact I have trouble getting on my own computer!

Good keyboard skills enable the child accurately to record their ideas with a word processor, avoiding the frustrations of not being able to find the correct key. If the child has to constantly visually locate the key on the keyboard, the effects of a visual impairment may be exaggerated. When a computer user is able to enter text without visually locating the keys, they demonstrate a much more efficient and effective use of technology. There are many keyboard training applications available. Not all allow you to change and adapt the display on screen. Key features to look for are:
  • uncluttered screen where presentation can be edited to suit the visual needs of the user feedback about progress ability to create exercises that use words that fit the ability and interests of the pupil speech feedback of text displayed on screen

Portability of device
Getting the most appropriate portable technology for a student is of the greatest importance, with their visual and curriculum needs being of highest consideration.

There seems to be clear and widespread agreement among the public and educators that students need to be proficient computer usersstudents need to be "computer literate." However, while districts are spending a great deal of money on technology, there seems to be only a vague notion of what computer literacy really means. - Can the student who operates a computer well enough to play "Doom" be considered computer literate? - Will a student who has used computers in school only for running tutorials or an integrated learning system have the skills necessary to survive in our society? - Will the ability to do basic word processing be sufficient for students entering the workplace or post-secondary education? Clearly not. In too many schools, most teachers and students still use computers only as the equivalent of expensive flash cards or electronic worksheets. The productivity side of computer use in the general content area curriculum is neglected or grossly underdeveloped (Moursund, 1995).

If you're looking for a way to get young kids comfortable with the keyboard, this program is a good choice. Children will learn the location of keys, and although specific hand placement is not taught, they will begin to divide the keyboard into right hand and left-hand keys. Lessons include typing upper and lowercase letters, numbers, short words, sentences, and punctuation. Kids will also learn to use the spacebar and the return/enter key. Three games reinforce the skills, and printable progress reports let grown-ups know how their kids are performing.
