However, after their K6-2 models, AMD has seized the throne as the prime supplier of CPUs for home systems. In 1999 AMD came up with their K6-3 and K7 (nicknamed Athlon, later Duron and Thunderbird) CPUs. The K7 was the most powerful line of PC CPUs, especially in floating point equations and (thus) game performance. Their price is also lower than those of P3 CPUs. The power dissipation of AMD CPUs is higher, though, so you need a better cooling solution. (If you buy a high-end cooler, make sure it fits into your motherboard.) Currently the Duron is the most powerful CPU in the low end and Thunderbird in the high end. New Thunderbird models add some power with their 133/266 MHz FrontSide Bus (FSB).
