Research Projects
I have recently started to assemble a few pages with short descriptions of (or color images related to) some of the application-oriented research projects which I have (or had been) working on. This WWW presentation of current and previous research projects is work in progress; please bear with me (and check back to see whether I've already gotten around to adding new stuff).

Implementations are available in C++, Java, Fortran, and other languages.
  • Abstract State Machines Can any algorithm, never mind how abstract, be modeled by a generalized machine very closely and faithfully? ... If we stick to one abstract level (abstracting from low-level details and being oblivious to a possible higher-level picture) and if the states of the algorithm reflect all the pertinent information, then a particular small instruction set suffices in all cases.

Related Links Overview The goal of computer vision research is to endow computers with the ability to understand still and moving imagery. Although we, as human beings, can make sense of photographs and video, to a computer they're just an array of numbers representing each pixel's brightness and color value. How can we get from this array of numbers to the understanding that there is a girl playing with a ball in front of a building? Who is the girl? How high is she throwing the ball? What is the underlying structure of the house? These are the sort of questions we are interested in. There is computer vision research going on in many groups at Microsoft.
