Types of keyboards Keyboard layouts ... Keyboard definitions KEYBOARD ABCs The keyboard is the main input peripheral used by all computers. The keyboard allows for user input and action with the computer. Much like many type writers the keyboard has all the letters of the alphabet, numbers - 9 and additional special operational keys. CARPAL TUNNEL INFORMATION Carpal Tunnel is an inflammatory disorder that affects the carpal (wrist) part of a specific nerve. Repetitive stress, physical trauma, certain diseases, or specific hereditary conditions can inflame the sheaths that surround wrist tendons. With the swelling of small blood vessels, pressure increases on the nerve and disrupts its functioning; numbness, pain, and a loss of manual dexterity result. Treatment can vary from Splinting the wrist, drugs and in severe cases surgery. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may occur as a user does repetitive motion on his or her keyboard. There have been several methods to help prevent this from happening. One of the most common way in preventing this is purchasing a Natural Style keyboard. This type of keyboard allows the hands to be in a more suitable position. These keyboards can be purchased from any computer retailer. It is recommended you test the keyboard before purchasing it. The keyboard can be difficult to use for some users. The following is an example of such a keyboard.

    http://www.thelearningstudio.com/keyboardingrationale.html
In my experience of teaching keyboarding, I have found that rarely does a single software program do the whole job. In my opinion, a typing tutor or edutainment keyboarding game is an innapropriate way to teach the early habits and basics of sound keyboarding; if this critical aspect of learning the keyboard is addressed at all! The importance of teaching ergonomics and correct use of hands, fingers and body alignment has become critical in the light of current research into repetitive stress injury and health-related issues. The KeyBoard Coach course addresses the need to teach pre-keyboarding concepts and correct fingering while providing a complete course for those wishing an alternative approach to learn keyboarding. The system incorporates word processing skills and encourages creative writing and editing. There is an important distinction between the underlying method/philosophy of KeyBoard Coach and that of most currently available commercial software. In the past 20-30 years, methods of teaching typing and most computer keyboarding programs employ a home-row method that teaches first the middle row (an ASDFGHJKL) Only after this meaningless set of letters ( letter salad !) has been learned does the home-row method add the rest of the keyboard letters, one at a time, through a series of exercises that are practices in a mindless and rote way. Current edutainment keyboarding software that is based upon the home-row method can be boring and frustrating to many would-be keyboarders.

Keyboarding Research Assessment Research Resources Software ... Tips Who Should Teach Keyboarding andWhen Should It Be Taught?
By Margaret J. Erthal Typewriting, once the domain of business education teachers, was taught in high school. The vocational business curriculum dictated a year of Typewriting I at the freshman level, a year of Typewriting II at the sophomore level, a year of Office Practice and Shorthand I at the junior level, and a year of Secretarial Practice and Shorthand II at the senior level. This curriculum was adhered to by the majority of schools as the objective of business education was vocational in nature. The introduction of the personal computer changed the business education curriculum and the method in which typewriting instruction was delivered. Computers allowed students to become more efficient as they keyed letters, memos, reports, and tables within the business education classroom. Soon, other disciplines began to take advantage of the efficiency and effectiveness of computers.English teachers required typed papers in English Composition class, and mathematics teachers used BASIC programming to expand on paper and pencil problems. A new class, Computer Literacy, appeared in school curricula and eventually achieved the status of a "required" course. Business teachers believed they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach Computer Literacy, but were soon faced with science and math teachers who also felt they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach this course.

    Teach your kids computer skills
Learn how small hands can master the mouse and navigate with a keyboard
By Mara Gulens E-mail this to a friend Printer-friendly version Worried about your child's ability to handle a mouse and keyboard? With children being introduced to computers at a younger age, and not just at school, it sometimes falls to parents to help nurture their computer skills. But where do you start? "Kids are so adaptable," says Darryl Reiter, father and president of the Children's Technology Workshop. "With enough use, they'll get it." Reiter's Toronto-based WeeWhizards workshop, designed specifically for kids four to six years old, provides kids with activities that develop skills, but most importantly, lets them experience the computer in unique ways. "The whole idea is to get younger kids doing creative things," he says. There are several ways you can help your children feel more comfortable with the different components of the computer. Reiter offers a few creative ways to make you feel more confident about that initial computer-learning phase.
    Gaining control of the mouse
When Toronto mom Moira French put her first child on the computer, she had concerns about dexterity, and ended up using an oversize mouse with a single click button. "You turn the ball as opposed to moving the mouse. That makes it easier and better for the kids mentally," she says.

The questionnaire comprised 49 questions seeking information on eleven pertinent factors: socioeconomic background of parents; gender; time using computers; applications used; subject preferences; application preferences; educational and vocational goals; perceived keyboard competency; preferred teaching methods; and, the value of typing courses. The questionnaire was administered by a Project researcher during normal class time.
