Dianne Idea #3

We are fortunate in our district to have our computers linked to a TV which is mounted on a wall. It makes it easier to incorporate various software and the internet into daily lessons (I teach Reading/Language Arts). I also have two additional computers (one is a castoff from home) which the kids use in their free time as they finish their work. To enable some of my slower students to get some computer time, I occasionally use a roster with the kids' names to decide who will have computer time that day. Sometimes I'll start at the beginning, middle or end of the roster to allow everyone an equal chance of using the computer. Good luck! Using the computer effectively in the classroom can be a tricky business! Karen Idea #4

Understanding Computing

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following: A pebble calculator works in a way similar to an abacus. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Abacus (optional) Drawing materials, including large sheets of paper Compasses (optional) Pebbles or other items that can be used as markers Procedures Review with your students how to use an abacus, making sure they understand the abacus was developed in order to store and calculate decimal numbers (0 through 9). Students should appreciate that the abacus was an early ancestor of the computer. If possible, have on hand an abacus with which they can experiment. Tell the class that a pebble calculator works similarly to an abacus. Let students know that they are going to construct and use their own pebble calculators. Students may work on their pebble calculators individually or with partners.

I use these assignments as reinforcement when learning the numeric keypad. These are Excel files with protected areas so the students can't accidentally erase the formula. There are three assignments and three "templates" that they can download and open to do the assignments in. I have them set to add them up so they can check their numbers based on their math. They simply change the top to their name and type the assignment number in the blank. Then, get busy typing.

After students have created PowerPoint projects or other work, allow them to share the work with the rest of the class using the Smart Board. Choose any interactive website and let the students work individually, in pairs, or in groups of three to complete activities at the website. One such site to use is aplusmath A good website to use on the smart board to let students explore and complete activities: Mikids.com
Go to the site, let students choose the appropriate grade level (they are color coded), and let them choose an activity. Math websites to use for grades 3, 4, and 5: eMints Pull up math (or other subject) worksheets on the smartboard and have students write the answers to complete the problems. One site to use for worksheets is: EdHelper Lots of other great sites to use with the smartboard can be found HERE If you open the notebook, you can write on the SmartBoard with Dry-Erase markers and the writing will appear on the notebook and can be printed out. One teacher is using it to work with spelling words. Another teacher uses it as a blackboard and prints out notes for students with IEPs. - Vivian, Saucon Valley Elementary School, Hellertown, PA

Welcome to Lesson Plan. Each issue, we will discuss a specific area of music technology and address ways to incorporate it into your curriculum. We're going to start out with some ideas for using music-notation (scoring) software. The ideas presented can be used with any such program, including Sibelius Software's Sibelius; MakeMusic's Finale, PrintMusic, and NotePad; and a variety of others. Many of the music-education national standards can be addressed using music-notation software. The most common standards that relate to notation software are composing and arranging music within specified guidelines and reading and notating music. (For more on the national standards, visit the MENC Web site at www.metmagazine.com
