Vermicomposting
Organic materials make up approximately two-thirds of the waste stream. While much of this is paper which can be used more efficiently or recycled, a large portion is material like food waste for which few beneficial options outside of composting exist. Fortunately, nature has provided one option that has been receiving increasing attentionvermicomposting. So what, you may ask, is vermicomposting and how does it work? Well, "vermi" is the Latin word for worm, and worms like to feed on slowly decomposing organic materials (e.g., vegetable scraps). The "end" product, called castings, is full of beneficial microbes and nutrients, and makes a great plant fertilizer. So, vermicomposting is the practice of using worms to make compost simply by feeding them your food waste. The reason vermicomposting is becoming popular is because worms are very efficient eating machines. They eat over half their body weight in organic matter per day! There are vermicomposting businesses in California making compost from the food waste they receive from restaurants and other industries. But you don't need to try and find a large facility to take your food waste when you can vermicompost at home, at school, and even at the office.

Information on composting, soil, raising worms, roses, insects, gardening.

This site is loaded with gardening information. Enjoy! My gardens are packed to the gills. Having great soil allows me to do this. I'm here to share with you some tips about raising worms, composting, gardening (with cats in mind), ponding, and how it works for me, and might work for you!
I found this blank canvas in 1991:
The 1991 BEFORE view is pretty boring, isn't it? You see only a flat lawn, an old shed and a yucca by the garage. So, I got busy making compost and raising worms. The AFTER view shows what the same area looks like in mid-November 2002 (the old shed is still back there). Of course, every year it looks a little different from the previous years! And next year...? Gardening...

Environmental Benefits of Composting and Compost Use
  • Returning organic materials to the land can increase water quality and quantity, reduce nonpoint source pollution, and increase crop production.
  • Composting manure can play an essential role in bringing many Texas rivers, streams, and lakes up to environmental standards in watersheds where confined animal feeding operations(CAFOs) are concentrated. Composted manure provides a viable and sustainable opportunity to move large volumes of organic material from the concentrated areas to other areas that need organic soil amendments.
  • Composting putrescible materials keeps them out of landfills and reduces the risk of leachate and methane production, both environmental threats.
  • Soils amended with organic material require less irrigation as well as fewer fertilizers and pesticides than do depleted soils, in order to achieve optimum crop production. Texas has more than 20 million acres under cultivation for crops. More than 6 million of those acres are irrigated, 70 percent from water wells.

How Composting Works
by Craig C. Freudenrich, Ph.D. Table of Contents Introduction to How Composting Works Composting Biology Making Compost Making a Compost Column Trash Audit Lots More Information Compare Prices for Composting Photo courtesy Karim Nice Home composting is an ideal way to reduce solid waste. Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product finished compost or humus that can benefit the environment as a natural fertilizer for gardening and farming.

Composting Composting is the process of placing carcasses in layers with a carbon source and manure to allow the natural heating process to break down the carcass. Composting is allowed for swine, sheep, goats and poultry. Composting is allowed by permit for cattle, horses and exotic animals.
Advantages
  • Biosecurity Year-round use Inexpensive Environmentally sound Value-added product to sell or use Best and recommended method to handle catastrophic losses Heat of composting process kills pathogens and insect larvae Done on-site
Disadvantages
  • May be more labor intensive Requires impervious pad, rot-resistant walls and cover to repel rain Requires source carbon (straw, sawdust, cornstalks, etc.), Nitrogen, water
Recommendations
Composting is an "art" that must be practiced because of the variety of materials, weather conditions and number of carcasses. It is best to have the same person doing the composting to ensure compost performance.
Here are some things to keep in mind: follow protocol as specified in Board of Animal Health Rule 1719.4000, process mortality daily, keep carcasses covered and at least six inches from sides, and take and record temperature daily (must reach 130 degrees Fahrenheit). The way that you construct and maintain the compost is essential so start with a base of carbon source material, put carcasses, litter and carbon source in layers, and mix pile at least one time when the temperature starts to decline; this will generate a new heat cycle after each mixing. Finished product must have no visible soft tissue.

180. Hermit Trail - New Composting Toilet
Grand Canyon Trail Crew installs a composting toilet at Hermit Creek Campground, Hermit Creek.
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/5907/her2.html
Stories From Grand Canyon National Park A COMPOSTING TOILET FOR THE HERMIT TRAIL By the Grand Canyon Trail Crew, September 1998 During the last week in September 1998, the Grand Canyon Trail Crew installed a new Phoenix R-200 composting toilet at the Hermit Creek Campground, located seven miles form the South Rim on the Hermit Trail. This campground accommodates overnight hikers from the Boucher, Tonto West, and Hermit Trails. The existing unit, a dehydrating toilet, constructed more than twenty years ago, had fallen into disrepair and was no longer functioning efficiently. The liquid was not evaporating, and the heavy, wet waste needed to be flown out by helicopter. The structure housing the toilet had become a safety hazard as well. These factors, along with the recent increase in the use of the Hermit Trail, dictated the need for a new toilet. The new composting toilet will not only improve the visitor experience, but will also provide a more environmentally and economically viable alternative to the old. The Phoenix R-200 is a fully contained structure that will not permit leaching into nearby Hermit Creek.
