Brought to you by JEONET What is composting?
  • Composting is the controlled breakdown of biodegradable yard and kitchen wastes.
  • Compost is generally dark in color, resembles topsoil, and makes a useful soil conditioner.
  • Success in composting depends upon sufficient moisture and oxygen as well as proper amounts of carbon and nitrogen.
Recommended Compostable Materials
  • Yard Wastes: leaves, grass clippings, trees, plan/shrub trimmings, wood chips/sawdust, garden trimmings
  • Kitchen Wastes: coffee grounds, tea bags, raw vegetable scraps, fruit skins/cores/rinds, corn husks
Materials that should not be composted According to the Iowa City Code, the following materials are not allowed in compost piles. These materials easily attract animals and emit odors and should be avoided: Meat, Bones, Fats, Grease, Oils, Dairy Products, and Raw manure. Choosing a container To prevent materials from being blown away, a container or enclosure of some sort must be used. For example:

Composting Publications A-Z index Composting With Worms
Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is the decomposing of organic waste with red worms. It is a very convenient way of composting for apartment dwellers, school staff and students, persons with disabilities, office workers, elderly persons and anyone else who would have difficulty maintaining an outdoor compost pile. Vermicomposting creates a fine black granular compost called "castings". Worm castings are an excellent source of slow-release soil nutrients for your plants or lawn. They also act as an excellent soil additive that prevents the caking of soil in potted plants. Creating a Home for Your Worms Bedding - Red worms can live in bins made from plastic or wood. These containers are partially filled with bedding material, most commonly peat moss, shredded newspaper, shredded cardboard, straw or a combination of these materials. Moisture - The worm bedding should be kept as moist as a well-wrung sponge. Occasionally, the bedding can become too wet and needs to be gently loosened with a hand cultivator or small garden fork.

http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/enved/Rec_Lessons/compost.htm
Site Navigation COMPOSTING PROJECT
OBJECTIVE:
Creating a compost pile as a classroom project will demonstrate to students that natural materials can be recycled.
RESOURCES:
INTRODUCTION:
Compost is an inexpensive and effective soil conditioner that recycles organic waste materials. Nutrients in plant material are returned to the soil through the breakdown of organic material by the action of microscopic fungi and aerobic bacteria. Organic wastes are decomposed, and the result is a material useful as a natural fertilizer.
In Japan, Europe, and recently in the United States, municipalities have established large-scale solid municipal composting facilities. The volume of organic material composted is diverted from other disposal facilities. Municipalities have found that composting leaves collected in the fall can save disposal fees.
When properly managed, a compost pile will not produce odors or attract pests. The finished product can be ready for use as a garden mulch in as little as six weeks with proper management. Compost has proven valuable for use in land reclamation efforts where erosion or earth moving activities have disturbed the topsoil.
PROCEDURE:
1. Find a suitable outdoor site to locate the compost pile. The pile should be exposed to rainfall, but may work best in a shaded location. Proximity to a water source is suggested.

In a massive aviary requiring the majority of our large enclosed front porch we raised bantam chickens as pets and egg providers for the household.
Diverting rainwater from the roof and grey water from our washing machine, we watered our 5 food gardens.

Composting Practices
H-885 (Revised), May 1992 Ronald C. Smith, Extension Horticulturist and Turfgrass Specialist One of the reasons North Dakota was so attractive to early settlers was the high organic matter content of the soil: crops sown grew at rapid rates and produced yields that were to set some standards for the Upper Midwest. Soil management in those early years was in the utilization of organic matter residue. Petroleum based fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides were unheard of in 1900. Barnyard manure, straw, corncobs, etc., were all reincorporated into the soil to return some nutrient value, but primarily to maintain the soil's superior tilth. The compost pile or bin was a common farmstead sight in those days. The family vegetable garden, flower garden, trees, shrubs and lawn would receive benefits from application of composted or organic matter.
