    GardenSmart Tip for September
It's the end of summer and all your summer annual baskets are starting to look a little worse for wear. Whatever you do, PLEASE DO NOT empty the baskets over the fence into a green space (or ravine, park, etc.)! These plants often overwinter and 'take off' in the spring, literally invading our local forests and choking out native species. Please be responsible and dispose of garden plant material in your compost bin or the curbside yard trimmings collection program. Invasive Species Info Natural Gardens Tour a Great Success!

    Composting
Composting turns household wastes into valuable fertilizer and soil organic matter.
    In your backyard
All organic matter eventually decomposes. Composting speeds the process by providing an ideal environment for bacteria and other decomposing microorganisms. The final product, humus or compost, looks and feels like fertile garden soil. This dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling stuff works wonders on all kinds of soil and provides vital nutrients to help plants grow and look better. Decomposing organisms consist of bacteria, fungi, and larger organisms such as worms, sow bugs, nematodes, and numerous others. Decomposing organisms need four key elements to thrive: nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygen. For best results, mix materials high in nitrogen (such as clover, fresh grass clippings, and livestock manure) and those high in carbon (such as dried leaves and twigs). If there is not a good supply of nitrogen-rich material, a handful of general lawn fertilizer will help the nitrogen-carbon ratio. Moisture is provided by rain, but you may need to water or cover the pile to keep it damp. Be careful not to saturate the pile. Turning or mixing the pile provides oxygen. Frequent turning yields faster decomposition.
    Getting started
Many materials can be added to a compost pile, including leaves, grass clippings, straw, woody brush, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, livestock manure, sawdust, and shredded paper. Do not use diseased plants, meat scraps that may attract animals, and dog or cat manure which can carry disease. Composting can be as simple or as involved as you would like, and depends on how much yard waste you have, how fast you want results, and the effort you are willing to invest.

    Composting
Compost is decomposed organic matter, made from leaves, grass clippings, wood chips and fruit and vegetable scraps. Added to your soil or sprinkled on your yard and garden, it helps grass and plants to thrive. Unlike some fertilizers, compost will not run off your yard and pollute Austin's creeks and waterways.
    Recipe for Compost
Composting is easy. Simply put different yard trimmings such as leaves and grass clippings in a bin or pile. You should have a mix of green material and brown material. Add water so the pile is slightly damp. Let the pile sit for 12 to 16 months. You can add fruit and vegetable scraps and other materials as generated. Cover new kitchen scraps with leaves or bury them in the pile. If the pile dries out, add more water to keep it damp.

    How Composting Works
    by Craig C. Freudenrich, Ph.D.
Table of Contents Introduction to How Composting Works Composting Biology Making Compost Making a Compost Column Trash Audit Lots More Information Compare Prices for Composting Photo courtesy Karim Nice Home composting is an ideal way to reduce solid waste. Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product

    76. Composting With Redworms
An informative how to of home vermiculture.
    http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/Redwormsedit.htm
Composting with Redworms Many homeowners have some kind of home composting system in operation. However, people living in condominiums, apartments and other residences don’t have a suitable place to start a compost pile. These people feel left out on a worthwhile cause, and need alternative ways to be part of the composting program. There is a solution! Kitchen wastes can be converted to a rich humus with the help of redworms. Children find worms fascinating. They are very well behaved "pets," and also help with household chores! What to Call It It is called a "home vermiculture system" or "worm box system." The system contains
    • A physical structure : a redworm box or container Biological organisms A controlled environment : temperature, moisture, acidity A maintenance program : bedding preparation, food waste burying, separating redworms from compost and using compost
Where to Put It Consider the needs of redworms and needs of the owner. Redworms need controlled temperature, contolled moisture content, controlled aeration and proper pH. Temperature: Redworms tolerate a wide range of temperatures, however, the ideal temperature is between 55 – 77 degrees F. Bedding with a temperature above 84 degrees F. is harmful, sometimes fatal, to redworm populations. The temperature should be measured inside the box, because the temperature in the moist bedding is usually lower than the outside air.
