Library and Resources Catalogs Card Catalog ... Naxos Music Library Card Catalogs Finding Records (LPs), Cassettes, and Tapes in the CIM Library The CIM Library has a large collection of long playing records (LPs), audiocassettes, and reel-to-reel tapes. The record (LP) collection consists mostly of commercial recordings of classical music. The audiocassette and tape (reel-to-reel) collections consist mostly of orchestra performances and faculty recitals at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Finding Aids: There are several tools to help people locate recordings of specific pieces as well as recordings performed by specific artists or ensembles. The most comprehensive tool to find records, cassettes and tapes is the card catalog that is located in the listening lab. CIM Programs: The library has programs for each recording of a CIM performance in our collection. The programs, going back to 1979, are in chronological order and are kept in binders. Each program will have a corresponding TAPE or CASSETTE number on it. Note that these performances are also listed in the card catalog. These binders can be accessed at the AV Desk in the listening area. Ask for the specific tape or cassette at the AV Desk. The Card Catalog: Most recordings contain more than one work (e.g. two piano concertos by two different composers, a collection of lieder by Wolff, piano recital by Murray Perahia featuring music by Liszt and Chopin). Most people when searching for a recording are looking for a particular piece of music or performer. The card catalog lists every piece that is in the recording collection by composer, title, and performer.

    http://eamusic.dartmouth.edu/~wowem/hardware/algorithmdefinition.html
    Introduction
Composers have long been fascinated by mathematical concepts in relation to music. The concept of "music of the spheres," dating back to Pythagorus, held the notion that humans were governed by the perfect proportions of the natural universe. This mathematical order may be seen in the musical interval choice and system of organization that was used by the ancient Greek culture. Procedures that entail rules or provisions to govern the act of musical composition have been used since the Medieval period; these same principles have been applied in very specific methods to many of the recent computer programs developed for algorithmic composition.
In both the Middle Ages and the 20th century [sic], composers have celebrated music's link with the logic of mathematics by introducing parametric systems of organization (primarily in the pitch domain), which are largely unrelated to aural perception. In the Middle Ages these techniques were invariably hidden, existing below a surface that conformed to stylistic norms. In the 20th century, some composers used a technique that introduced a novel way of ordering pitches, but did so within the context of traditional musical forms.(Jon Appleton, "Machine Songs III: Music in the Service of Science - Science in the Service of Music," Computer Music Journal 16, no. 3 (Fall 1992): 18.)

How to Find Biographical Materials for a Specific Composer
This page will take you, step by step, through the process of finding general, biographical materials on a specific composer, in Hale Library. If you have any questions about this, or any other Library matter, your best bet is to go to the General Reference Desk (on the 2nd floor) and ask. The people at that desk are very willing to help, and are there to help you. The general rule is: if you haven't found what you need in 15 minutes, ask someone for help. This process will probably take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete. STEP 1
    Ask Chad Pape for help.
Please do not hesitate to do this. Chad is the interim Music Librarian, and he likes helping you. He was a music student at KSU, and understands your frustrations. Let him help you. There is no substitute for face-to-face instruction. Use this page after he's helped you a couple of times, or if he's unavailable. STEP 2
You must have your student ID to check out items from the Library.

Though this work is called a dictionary, it is actually the most comprehensive music encyclopedia in English. With over 20,000 biographical entries, most of which include bibliographies, it is a good starting point for finding information on composers. Use the Article Search feature to retrieve articles on individual composers, or browse the A-Z article list.

ML100 .I57 1985 Biographical information on composers and critical analyses of their works may also be found in surveys of music history, both general and specific by period. For general works, see ML160; for period studies, see ML193 (17th-20th centuries), ML194 (17th century), ML195 (18th), ML196 (19th), and ML197 (20th). A list of some specific starting points follows. Consult the indexes and bibliographies of these books to find information on a particular composer or work: Donald J. Grout and Claude V. Palisca.

    UNIVERSAL BECAUSE SPECIFIC
    Arguments for a contextual approach
    by Ian MacDonald
"A composer must be local before he can be universal."
    - Ralph Vaughan Williams
In The New Shostakovich , I indicated some of the ways in which the modern tendencies to elevate abstraction and formal beauty conspire to create an atmosphere in which music with specific inner significance, such as Shostakovich's, is reduced or glossed over in both performance and analysis. I would like here to amplify this with reference to the dogmatic subjectivism associated with these trends, inasmuch as this critical stance has become something of a fallback position for those once happy to accept the Soviet line on Shostakovich yet now unwilling to adopt the contrary position. To take a typical example, Nicholas Kenyon has dismissed my account of Shostakovich's historical context as irrelevant, "undervaluing a composer whose musical genius, as someone said of Mozart's, was to suggest an infinite number of possibilities at once". This statement neatly encapsulates the paradox of the aesthetic ideal of "universality" in music - which is that, to be "universal", a given composition must not (as one might expect) signify more or less the same thing to all men, but rather mean different things to everyone who hears it. The oddity of this notion, with its overtones of Doublethink, is clear from the fact that, in language, a statement which suggested an infinite number of possibilities at once would certainly be meaningless.
