Bachelor of Music in Combination with an Outside Field
This program allows you to combine music with a sequence of courses in another discipline, such as audio production, scriptwriting, advertising and public relations, computer science, economics, or mathematics. Thus you'll have the maximum flexibility to tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans. About half your courses will be in music; the other half will be a combination of liberal arts study and courses in your chosen outside field
Degree Requirements
Specific requirements for the degree program are found in the Ithaca College undergraduate catalog.
Bachelor of Music in Composition
The composition program features guest composers and a state-of-the-art electronic and computer studio. In addition, the contemporary chamber ensemble performs student works, and student composers study and work with a distinguished composer in residence as part of the Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition series. Guest composers such as John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Joan Tower, and John Harbison present master classes, critique student work, and give lectures on their own works, and music school ensembles perform the visiting composers' works. The broad-based and practical approach of the composition program affords you the opportunity to study with some of the country's leading composers, to hear your own music performed by skilled musicians and ensembles, and to enrich your traditional composition study with writing experiences in popular American styles and commercial media.

    BAROQUE
    MUSIC
    DEFINED
Baroque music expresses order, the fundamental order of the universe. Yet it is always lively and tuneful. Follow the development of music through this brief outline, from the earliest times to the present day, with baroque music set in historical context. The English word baroque is derived from the Italian barocco , meaning bizarre , though probably exuberant would be a better translation more accurately reflecting the sense. The usage of this term originated in the 1860s to describe the highly decorated style of 17th and 18th century religious and public buildings in Italy, Germany and Austria, as typified by the very baroque angelic organist adorning the Gottfried Silbermann organ completed in 1714 for the Cathedral in Freiberg, Saxony (illustrated above). Later, during the early-to-mid 1900s, the term baroque was applied by association to music of the 17th and early 18th century, and today the term baroque has come to refer to a very clearly definable type or genre of music which originated, broadly speaking, around 1600 and came to fruition between 1700 and 1750. Listen to music of the 1200s and 1300s.

    Antonio Caldara
    (c.1670 - 1736)
Italian composer. As a chorister at St. Mark's, Venice, he was probably educated in music by maestro di cappella Legrenzi . In 1693 and 1699 he published two collections of trio sonatas (opp. 1 and 2); also in 1699 he was appointed maestro di cappella for Duke Ferdinando Carlo of Mantua. There he composed operas ( L'oracolo in sogno, Opera pastorale, Paride sull'Ida, 1704) that received lavish productions. During his tenure as maestro for Prince Ruspoli in Rome (beginning 1709), he composed 150 solo cantatas (some for Emperor Joseph I and for Cardinal Ottoboni). When Marc'Antonio Ziani, the imperial Kapellmeister, died in 17l5, J. J. Fux succeeded him; the following year Caldara was appointed by the new emperor, Charles VI, to assume Fux's former position as Vice- Kapellmeister. This position required Caldara to compose operas and oratorios for a great many court celebrations (name days, birthdays, weddings); in return, the composer demanded of the emperor an ever larger salary. By 1729 he was receiving 3,900 florins, more than Fux's salary. Caldara composed nearly 100 operas, 43 known oratorios, cantatas, Masses, madrigals, and canons.

    http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2107/viola/casadesu.html
    "Handel" Concerto by Henri Casadesus
Henri Gustave Casadesus, 1879 to 1947 , was a gifted violist. He was also very interested in rare instruments and found a society in Paris that gave performances on such instrtuments up until the beginning of the second world war. Some of Casadesus' instruments are still in the collection of the Boston Symphony. Becoming something of a "musical diplomat", Casadesus traveled the United States performing in various quartets and orchestras, often with his brothers. One of the things the Casadesus brothers became famous for was debuting 'rediscovered' works of 18th Century composers such as Mozart, C.P.E. Bach, and Handel. At the time, these works were taken at face value, but stylistic analyzation since has revealed that these works were not what they seemed. In fact, during the last few years, evidence has come to light that the Casadesus brothers wrote these pieces themselves! It is worth mentioning that the Casadesus family has never denied these allegations. At any rate, the concerto is a solid, delightful work, displaying the the skills of the preformer well. While it seems unlikely that a concerto would have been written by Handel for such an obscure instrument (in his time!!) as the viola, the work never-th-eless is deeply rooted in the late Baroque/Early Classical style. That is: rigid structure, piano to forte dynamics, and the three movement form. The work was well-recived when it was debuted, though it has dropped from the spotlight in recent times. Its fortunes rallied, however, when the Suzuki method books selected this concerto to complete their Viola Method Book 8 and have since made a recording to bundle with the book.

Composer of the Month - February, 2004 Sergei Rachmaninoff, 1873-1943

by Daryl Lee The discipline of Zverev's training and excellent stylistic examples were the turning point in Rachmaninoff's education. At the age of 19, he published his C# Minor Prelude Trio Elegiac #2 , written in response to Tchaikovsky's death in 1893. In 1897, he produced Symphony No. 1 , which was a dismal failure due to the poor performance of the conductor at its premiere. This failure drove him into such a deep depression that he produced nothing for three years. He emerged from this depression in 1901 only after a series of hypnotic treatments. The first product after these treatments was the Second Piano Concerto , considered by many critics today to be the best composition of his career. Rachmaninoff dedicated it to Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who had given him the hypnotic treatments. The period from 1901 to 1917 was Rachmaninoff's most productive, resulting in 22 of his 45 opuses. Concerned about his future in the face of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Rachmaninoff left Russia. He visited America frequently, gradually making it his home base, and moved there permanently in 1936. He died in Beverly Hills, CA, just five months after becoming an American citizen.

Composer of the Month - January, 2004 Francis Poulenc, 1899-1963

by Daryl Lee Born just before the arrival of the 20 th Century to a pharmaceuticals manufacturer whose family business has survived to the 21 st Century, Poulenc began his musical studies early. At the age of five years, he began learning his keyboard skills from his mother. His father's financial success meant that Poulenc's career served his own personal interests more than his need for financial support, leading to a highly unconventional style. It also meant that he was largely self-taught, partly due to the difficulty of finding teachers who can teach the extraordinary. For example, he was recommended to the prestigious Paris Conservatory by Igor Stravinsky, but his application was rejected upon the discovery of his admiration of the composer Erik Satie. He had decided at the age of fourteen that he intended to become a musical composer. Sadly, both of his parents died before any of his compositions were performed in public. He was a relentless perfectionist. He once spent over ten years on a single four-minute song, seeking the perfect musical setting of a text that he believed demanded nothing less. One string quartet found its way to the Paris sewer because he despaired of its ever reaching the level he demanded of himself.

Composer of the Month - May, 2004 Giacomo Puccini, 1858-1924

by Daryl Lee There is a close linkage between two seemingly unrelated pieces on the program of the Music of the Stage , the final performance of the 2003-2004 MOS season. The Humming Chorus, from Madam Butterfly might never have been written were it not for the Triumphal Scene in Verdi's Aida . Giacomo Puccini had begun his musical career as a church organist for churches in his home town of Lucca, but when at the age of 18 he saw Aida performed, he knew that operatic composition would be his life's work. In 1884, while a student at the Milan Conservatory, he entered a one-act opera competition. He didn't win, but his opera was produced to a warm reception, and his compositional career was underway. In 1891, the production of Manon Lescaut in Turin established Puccini as a composer to be reckoned with. This work was followed in rapid succession by three of his most enduring works

Scoring Music: Writing for Specific Instruments
By: Catherine Schmidt-Jones Summary: Here are some basic guidelines for musicians who would like to try writing or rewriting a piece of music for a particular set of instruments.
    Introduction
Click here to Skip introduction and go straight to rules. Arranging music is the art of rewriting a piece of music that already exists, usually by writing it for a different instrumentation. If you are composing an original piece of music, the step that involves writing it for specific instruments is called scoring or orchestration (although this term often refers specifically to writing for an orchestra). The beginning arranger/orchestrator will find some useful tips here, but if you are trying your hand at original composition, you need much more than good scoring for a successful piece. Melody harmony rhythm form and counterpoint are all important elements that a good composer must know how to handle properly, and none of those is covered here. But texture and timbre are also very important aspects of a piece of music, and these are in the hands of the arranger/orchestrator. There are, of course, many arrangements that substantially alter the original piece, changing the form or harmony, or adding new countermelodies. But using the form, melody, countermelodies, and chords, of a piece and simply giving it an entirely new orchestration can be a very good way to start learning the art of arranging. Note:
    History
In Medieval and Renaissance times, large instrumental ensembles were unusual. When a piece did include parts for more than one instrument, the parts were not even necessarily for specific instruments. (For example, the same music for four players might be played by either four string or four recorder players.)

MAGIC Call # Ranges Finding individual songs requires some sleuthing because most are not separately indexed. A large number of published indexes, various Magic searching strategies, and several MSU-specific indexes (kept at the desk) can help. Also, feel free to ask for assistance if necessary. MAGIC Details for general Magic searches are provided on the Music Searching Guide page. Search by author to find a performer, composer, librettist, and, occasionally a poet, for a large collection of songs. Most songs are not searchable by individual title and may not be separately listed under the composer's name. A search under the composer and uniform title will usually get you close to what you need. Example: search Schubert, Franz, then "uniform title" Songs or Songs. Selections. If you know a specific composer, it's usually possible to find that individual's song collections and simply look through them. For recordings, finding a collection of a composer's songs is usually possible; sometimes individual titles are easier to find for recordings than for scores. TITLE searches for songs are often unproductive unless the piece is from a larger work with a distinctive title. A KEYWORD search can help, provided you spell all words correctly and enter the exact words.
