The following is a suggested plan for graduating in 8 semesters. Many music courses must be taken in sequence and some are offered fall or spring only. The general education courses may be taken out of the sequence shown here. While this plan completes all courses in eight semesters, each semester is a demanding load. Many students prefer to lighten this load by taking general education during the summer or by extending the plan to nine semesters. Letters to W. G. Whittaker
Sp Coll MS Gen 1350
2004 is the 70th anniversary of the death of the composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934), and to mark the occasion the September Book of the Month will focus on the correspondence between Holst and his friend and colleague William Gillies Whittaker. Over two hundred letters written between 1913 and 1934 are held by the Library, as well as a small number of manuscripts of works by Holst. The letters were donated to the University Library in 1963 by Whittaker’s daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Edward Pollitzer, along with the scores that comprised Whittaker’s working library.
Beginning of l etter 4 (MS Gen 1350/4): December 13, 1915 Holst and Whittaker were born within two years of each other, Holst in 1874 and Whittaker in 1876. Best known nowadays as the composer of the Planets Suite, Holst was a prolific composer as well as a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. He undertook his education at the Royal College of Music between 1893 and 1898. Following a short period as an orchestral trombone player Holst then moved to teaching as his main occupation, and became Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, and later the Director of Music at Morley College. Later in his career he took on appointments at University level. His works range from orchestral, choral and operatic works to instrumental music.

Philip P. Bliss
A Short Biographical Sketch Philip Paul Bliss, composer and singer, was born in Clearfield county, Pa., July 9, 1838. His early life was spent in farming districts of Pennsylvania and Ohio, where opportunities for culture were not afforded, and he was ten years of age before he first heard a piano. At the age of thirteen he united with the Baptist church at Elk Run, Pa., and even in his earlier years had been of a serious turn of mind. During one of his tours he met the evangelist, Dwight L. Moody, and a strong friendship sprang up between them. The result was that Mr. Bliss began to spend considerable time in the composition of sacred music in the form of songs, and in evangelistic labors. In 1874 he gave up all other work to devote himself to conducting revival meetings, chiefly in connection with Maj. D.W. Whittle, and by his manly character, his winning address, and his earnest spirit and his magnetic voice, had great power over his audiences. His first songs were set to music by George F. Root, but those by which he became best known were wholly his own production. The most popular, "Hold the Fort," was inspired by a message signalled during the civil war by Gen. William T. Sherman. Others scarcely less popular were "Only an Armor Bearer," "Rescue the Perishing," "Pull for the Shore," and "Hallelujah! tis done!" Four collections of his songs were published: "The Charm" (1871); "The Song Tree" (1872); "The Joy" (1873), and "Gospel Songs" (1874).

UK Research SPOTLIGHT He does not recall that early mini-concert for his mother, a kindergarten teacher in his native Wilmington, Del., but he does know that his very early love of music led him to a lifelong career in the study, research and teaching of music and music theory. Most recently, since 2000, his music career has brought him to the faculty of the School of Music in the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts. In addition to his research, writing and teaching, Holm-Hudson, as most music faculty members, also continues to perform music. Last year, he directed and sang the baritone role in the UK production of Tom Johnson’s "Four Note Opera.” His composition of “Kali Yuga” for eight saxophones, electric bass and three percussionists premiered at the Kentucky Music Teachers Association Conference at Murray State University Oct. 17. Recently he has focused on the music and art of early 20th Century Lithuanian composer-artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis whose work, although less well known in the rest of the world, is quite popular in the former Soviet state of Lithuania.
