81. Consortium Of Vermont Composers
News and resources from the organization that publishes the journal Consorting.
http://www.maltedmedia.com/consort/
Newly Revitalized!
Composers from the Consortium are featured regularly on
which can be heard every Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm on WGDR-FM 91.1 The Consortium of Vermont Composers was founded in 1988 to get new music out there from in here. Did you know that nearly 250 composers live and work in Vermont, with music ranging from the straightforward song to the electronic edge? Yes, they do! We're the most composer-friendly state in the U.S.! The Consortium occasionally publishes Consorting Consortium . Large sums of money, artistic contributions, lip-slathering commissions and general bewilderment are also welcome. The Consortium of Vermont Composers can be reached for scores, recordings, and music samples. The Consortium of Vermont Composers underwent a period of dormancy from 1998-2004. The need for a strong composers organization in Vermont faded when it had fulfilled its initial mission to increase the awareness of Vermont composers among Vermont ensembles. But now it's back! (You can hear what was going on in those quiet years by listening to the award-winning radio/cyber show and website , which invites composers everywhere to submit materials for broadcast and to join its hosts for interviews.)

You've worked very hard.

You've invested more time and money creating and recording your compositions. At some point along the way, you ask yourself, "How can I take my craft to the next step?" The Internet is helping to level the playing field between the well-connected and the not-so-well connected . It is our hope, that these pages can offer songwriters and composers ideas for developing the craft of songwriting now as well as how to protect and submit the finished and even the "not-yet-completed-need-some-external-input" songs. What if you are sitting on a composition that could be generating royalty income for you, but you cannot get it in the hands of the right artist or producer? This site will also create a venue to connect with others in the industry.

June 14, 2004 While enjoying the numerous musical events Santa Fe has to offer this summer, don't forget to take advantage of the abundant, diverse offerings of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Kicking off its 32nd season with a gala concert July 19, the two-month festival brings together more than 80 artists from around the world for more than 40 concerts in multiple venues.
Chamber music is defined as music intended to be performed by a small ensemble, usually without a conductor. In the days of drawing-room concerts, these small performing groups could usually fit in a large room, giving the form its name. There is no shortage of chamber music available; many composers of many different times and styles have composed music for such ensembles.
The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival shows great diversity in both its performers and repertoire, featuring well-known classics, modern composers, jazz and world music. This year's festival will feature three specially commissioned works, including a string and piano quintet by artistic director Marc Neikrug. In addition to the wide variety of musical offerings, there will also be a mini film festival with the musical documentaries of and live commentary by Christopher Nupen.

GEN 1120: Rhetoric and Composition (F02)
The subject of this course is writing and rhetoric. It has three inter-related assumptions and goals. The first assumption of this course is that all writing is rhetorical, that is, designed to bring about effects in the material world. Therefore, the course will teach you to become more aware of the rhetorical effects of your own writing, and of literary and cultural texts, and to see your own role in the process of knowledge creation and culture-making. Another assumption of this course is that all reading is interpretive, that is, it involves a negotiation between the reader's and the writer's views of the world.. Thus, the course will teach you to be more aware of your own views, to understand alternate views, and to engage in written dialogue and debate with others.

Biography, musicography, links to related composers, and companion resources from the Here Of A Sunday Morning radio program.
http://www.hoasm.org/IX/IXBach.html
IX: Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was born into the musical family of Bachs in Eisenach in 1685. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, had held the post of a court trumpeter in Eisenach along with that of head of the town piper band, and according to his household rules, the young Johann Sebastian was trained not only as a clavier player, but on several instruments. From 1693 to 1695 he attended the Lateinschule in Eisenach. In 1694, when he was nine, his mother died, and in 1695, his father. On the death of his father he was taken into the house of his eldest brother, Johann Christoph, who was organist in Ohrdruf. From 1695 to 1700 he attended the Gymnasium there, and also became a pupil of his brother who had studied with Johann Pachelbel in Erfurt, and (according to the 1754 obituary) 'under his guidance he laid the foundations of his keyboard playing.'
Partitas. Johann Adam Reinken
Bach's first, though only brief, professional engagement was as a court violinist in the private band of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, from March to July 1703.
Dietrich Buxtehude
. For the citizens of Arnstadt the stormy development of their ambitious organist must have been bewildering. The consistory complained 'that he had hitherto made many curious variations in the chorale, and mingled many strange notes in it;' furthermore they deplored that Bach took no interest in the figured music for the choir. This last clearly indicates that Bach in fact quite consciously devoted himself to the purely organistic, and certainly more to playing than to composing, since very few compositions have been preserved from those years.
