Bill Banfield Jazzchamberworks Innova.mu This is just a CD of first class music: music that has integrity, music that acknowledges its roots and yet imaginatively predicts some new and exciting directions for composition, orchestration, and performance. David Baker, composer, jazz educator, and director of the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra He displays the individual voices of his musicians in a way that illuminates his own personality, but also allows the varied personalities of the gifted individuals to shine through. But thankfully, some musicians such as Bill Banfield, still revel in the joy and excitement of spontaneity. Bill is an exciting composer who is extending a musical tradition pioneered by James Reese Europe, Will Marion Cook, William Grant Still, and Duke Ellington. host/director Jazz at the Kennedy Center William Cedric Banfield belongs to a vanguard of eclectic, young composers whose backgrounds, training, and creative output traverse traditional categories. While building on the achievements of such "elder statesmen" as Hale Smith, George Russell, and T. J. Anderson, Banfield's creative work strikes out in bold new directions. A college professor, Banfield has accrued a long list of accomplishments that clearly place him among the ranks of America's original compositional voices. His work has been widely recognized, having been performed by professional and university orchestras in the United States. His activities have earned distinguished awards, grants, commissions, and residencies. At the same time, he remains involved in jazz, gospel, and popular idioms by maintaining an active performance career as a jazz guitarist.

is generally considered to be the first real Jazz musician. Other early players included Freddie Keppard Bunk Johnson , and Clarence Williams . Although these musicians names are unknown to most people, then and now, their ideas are still being elaborated on to this day. Most of these men could not make a living with their music and were forced to work menial jobs to get by. The second wave of New Orleans Jazz musicians like Joe "King" Oliver Kid Ory , and Jelly Roll Morton fromed small bands, that took the music of these older men and increased the complexity and dynamic of their music, as well as gaining greater commercial success. This music became know as "Hot Jazz", because of the often break neck speeds and amazing improvised polyphony that these bands produced. A young virtuoso cornet player named Louis Armstrong was discovered in New Orleans by King Oliver . Armstrong soon grew to become the greatest Jazz musician of his era and eventually one of the biggest stars in the world. The impact of Armstrong and other Jazz musicians altered the course of both popular and Classical music. African American musical styles became the dominant force in 20th century music.
The Red Hot Archive is a place to study and enjoy the music of these early "Jazzmen". Due to recent advances in technology it is now possible to broadcast text, music, and pictures around the world via the Internet. This site is an experiment in using this new multimedia technology. We hope it will combine the best of books and audio recordings, into valuable and enjoyable tool for appreciating this music and the men and women who produced it. This site is a work in progress and will continue to grow as more recordings and writings are added to the archive. Submissions, suggestions, and corrections are welcome.

GENISIS
The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra formed in autumn 1995, gave its first concerts at Scotland's major jazz festivals the following summer and, in its many performances at home and further afield since then, has gained a reputation for outstanding quality in both celebrating the established big band repertoire and creating new and exciting work within the large scale jazz format. Prior to the Orchestra's formation, Scotland had produced many exemplary jazz musicians. Historically, from trombonist George Chisholm onwards through saxophonists Joe Temperley and Bobby Wellins, trumpeter and arranger Jimmy Deuchar and guitarist Jim Mullen, these had tended to export their talents to England, Europe and the USA. GUEST ARTISTS Under Smith's direction the orchestra has matched ambition with results. Its extensive list of collaborators includes: saxophonists John Dankworth OBE, Bobby Watson, Peter King, John Ruocco, Joe Temperley

For nearly half a century Duke Ellington led the premier
American big band, and through his compositions and
performances he brought artistic credibility to African American instrument. Although best known for composing, leading and performing about 2,000 "big band" jazz pieces, Ellington also composed orchestral, chamber and solo piano works in the classical genre.  His classical music has gradually gained new listeners in recent years due to recordings which are the focus of this Web page. SWING and the BIG BANDS
SWING was 'the' thing, and "jump jivin' "Cats" and "Kittens" were lindy hopping in every ballroom and dancehall in the land. The Big Bands such as - Benny Goodman - "the King of Swing", the Dorseys, Glenn Miller, and a host of others, were riding high. Loyal and enthusiatic fans followed all the 'doings' of their favorite band. For awhile, other music was to take the place of the great bands, but with the new millenium, a new generation has re-discovered Swing and Jazz. And, it's not just a nostalgia "trip", - while the new bands are indeed playing the great standards of the Swing era, they are also writing new tunes in the Swing fashion.
