Performance Today host Martin Goldsmith is joined by composer David Baker, a distinguished professor of music and chairman of the jazz studies department at Indiana University, as well as artistic director of the Smithsonian Master Works Jazz Orchestra. The Jazz Gallery’s Composers Series: 2002 Finale
Jason Lindner and Dafnis Prieto: November 23rd

Jason Lindner begins the set with one of his compositions, “Russian Dance”. A strong rhythm player, Lindner immediately establishes a Slavic/gypsy beat which he accents with an eastern minor mode melody. Dafnis Prieto locks in impeccably and supports the motif Lindner has established through a layered set of polyrhythms that provide accented color. Trumpet player Avishai Cohen uses this rich background to stream a distant yet crisp and pulsing melody. Lindner carries his initial motif and then breaks it down to a minimalist counter point to add greater effect to Dafnis’s drumming, and then ushers it up again with a thrust of brass. The dance is exotic and passionate. We are engaged from the onset and informed that it has many turns and steps, both delicate and forceful, of which we must be prepared for if we wish to keep up.
The dance theme is extended in Preito’s piece “Trio Absolute” a work reflective of the rhythmic tradition of his homeland Cuba. “Cut the clave and see how it tastes”, he comments in his notes. The song is powerful right from the get go, Lindner keeps up with heavy cords as Prieto leads the charge at a driving pace, sometimes staccato and then polyrhythmic again. He dons the drum set and flexes it, using it as if it is another layer of skin. This piece exists in a territory where 4/4 is un-welcomed, puro cubano. We tremble.

What Is A Jazz Composer?
Each jazz musician when he takes a horn in his hand - trumpet, bass, saxophone, drums - whatever instrument he plays - each soloist, that is, when he begins to ad lib on a given composition with a title and improvise a new creative melody, this man is taking the place of a composer. He is saying, "listen, I am going to give you a new complete idea with a new set of chord changes. I am going to give you a new melodic conception on a tune you are familiar with. I am a composer." That's what he is saying. I have noticed that there are many kinds of composers in this so-called jazz. For instance, there are musicians who simply take rhythmic patterns and very spare notes-very limited invention melodically-and play in a soulful swinging way. Some people in the audience, when asked what they think about jazz, say, "I just go by the feeling, I go by the feeling the guy gives me." Now, whether there is feeling or not depends upon what your environment or your association is or whatever you may have in common with the player. If you feel empathy for his personal outlook, you naturally feel him musically more than some other environmental and musical opposite who is, in a way. beyond you. Today, things are at the other extreme. Everything is supposed to be invented, the guys never repeat anything at all and probably couldn't. They don't even write down their own tunes, they just make them up as they sit on the bandstand. It's all right, I don't question it. I know and hear what they are doing. But the validity remains to be seen - what comes, what is left, after you hear the melody and after you hear the solo. Unless you just want to hear the feeling, as they say.

    Miles Davis (1928-1991)
    : Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Miles Davis, never falling short of new ideas, had for the last 5 decades inspired countless numbers of Musicians and Composers...Many of which have become accomplished musicians by their own right...In the early years, Dolphy, Coltrane, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Philly Joe Jones, to name a few, all played a part in Miles' quest for new directions. It is no surprise to later see the talents of Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and George Coleman all helping to bring Miles' ambitions together..Miles has recorded over 120 albums, but a few will always stand out above the rest.. Such was the case with "Milestones", "Kind of Blue", "Four and More", "My Funny Valentine" and "Plugged Nickel"..The following era would include "Miles Ahead", "Bitches Brew", and "In a Silent Way"....Miles was truly miles ahead, and his music will live forever.. We may never really understand the man, "Miles Davis", but we will continue to love his music now and for years to come..

Composer brings an element of surprise to her work
August 12, 2005 Carla Bley has a pair of interesting memories from her previous appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival which happened 40 years ago this summer. The first is that the person who was supposed to introduce the group she was performing with, the Jazz Composers Orchestra, refused to do so. The orchestra was too avant-garde for the guy's taste, and he claimed he wouldn't be able to call what they were doing ''jazz" with a straight face. The other is that her only child, Karen Mantler, was conceived that weekend. ''I saw [festival promoter George Wein] like a year after Newport," Bley says on the phone from her home near Woodstock, N.Y., ''and I had a three-month-old child, and so he just worked back in his mind. He said, 'Aha, that happened at my festival, didn't it?' ''I hope it doesn't happen this time," she adds, laughing. ''I'll have to tell Steve to be very careful." Steve is Steve Swallow, Bley's longtime soul mate and bandmate and a perennial poll-winner as jazz's best electric bassist. The couple will open the Pavilion stage at the JVC Jazz Festival-Newport tomorrow morning with Bley's quartet the Lost Chords, joined by saxophonist Andy Sheppard and drummer Billy Drummond. The quartet will be playing three pieces by Bley: something from their excellent 2004 CD, ''The Lost Chords"; a quartet adaptation of Bley's reworking of ''The National

    Celebration Of The Spirit
    (CIMP)
    by Jay Collins
    22 June 2004
Maintaining a large ensemble, especially one that forges its way into experimental realms, is essentially impossible these days. For instance, look at Barry Guy's brilliant London Composer's Jazz Orchestra, which seems to be on indefinite hiatus at present. Fortunately, some regional creative collectives do exist and even play together when a performance and/or recording opportunity presents itself. One such band, the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, founded by composer Darrell Katz, has been in existence since 1985 and excels due to its capacious stylistic sweep. Comprised of musicians from throughout New England, the ensemble seems to be more active lately, with several releases on the Cadence family of labels, including their most recent release, Celebration Of The Spirit
Before we go any further, one familiar with CIMP's "controversial" recording techniques might wonder why such a release would be on CIMP (a large band in the Spirit Room?). While the locale might be different (an empty concert hall in Boston), the two microphones, no compression, no edits, no mixing aesthetic is still present on this CIMP road trip. Although people's tastes (and ears) might range pretty dramatically, the sounds produced are quite clear and natural, perfectly matched to this collective.
