Welcome to Original Jazz Charts on Bsharp.org, where jazz composers present their compositions and a little about themselves. A long time ago, this site was mirrored at WNUR; however, that mirror, although still live, is not maintained and is way out of date. If you have it bookmarked, please replace that bookmark with this page. Musicians on the net can post images of charts of their original tunes to this area (see below for submission guidelines). MIDI files (preferably with General MIDI patch changes), notation software files and the like are also welcome. Most of these composers are regular readers of the Usenet group rec.music.bluenote . You are encouraged to play their tunes and post comments to r.m.b. That's one of the purposes of this link! If you would like to play a tune in public, however, you should ask the composer first whether that is o.k. All the composers here can be directly contacted via email. You and the composer may have very different interpretations of the same chart!

There is a long jazz tradition in the Netherlands, from post-bop styles to a thriving avant-garde scene that developed in the 1960s. American jazz musicians have sometimes criticized Dutch jazz, arguing that it doesn’t swing, or that it isn’t sufficiently rooted in the blues. But with its philosophical roots in absurdism and slapstick, it’s one of the few places where one can find humor in an otherwise serious art form. Why is Dutch jazz so robust and widespread? Many point to the country’s unique subsidy system, run by the government for the past two decades, which helps organize funding for improvised music. But as subsidies are being cut the landscape may now be changing. We get a history of Dutch jazz and learn how it relates to what else is happening today. We’re joined by Hans Mantel, an Amsterdam-based bassist, Radio Netherlands producer, and jazz authority.

    Improvisation
By Loren Schoenberg, Conductor and Saxophonist
The Wizard of Oz. You decide who is going to play whom. It is understood that Dorothy is going to start in Kansas, there's going to be a tornado, she's going to encounter a gaggle of crazy characters in the Land of Oz, and by the end, she will wake up in her own bed at home. The way that you get from scene to scene will be up to the actors at the moment, but they are all so familiar with the progression of events and the underlying theme/story that the improvisation adds a special kind of intensity and calls for a higher level of engagement. This frequently results in a new sense of excitement and the possibility of understanding in a new fashion this well-known story.
That, in essence, is what a jazz band does. They all know the tune beforehand, and the responsibilities of their chosen instruments. The piano, guitar, bass and drums, while all able to fill the role of soloist, are essentially there as accompaniment, and provide the rhythmic and harmonic basis over which the other soloists will invent their own melodic variations. The framework is flexible so that the soloists may shorten or lengthen their improvisations depending on the inspiration of the moment. The other players, then, have a responsibility to react to what has preceded them. Even when they are not soloing, members of a jazz band have to be intimately attuned to the music at all times because they never know what direction it might take. If you don't, you may, as

    Photo: G. Schirmer, Inc.
Born 29 April 1899 in Washington DC, composer, bandleader, and pianist Edward Kennedy ("Duke") Ellington was recognized in his lifetime as one of the greatest jazz composers and performers. Nicknamed "Duke" by a boyhood friend who admired his regal air, the name stuck and became indelibly associated with the finest creations in big band and vocal jazz. A genius for instrumental combinations, improvisation, and jazz arranging brought the world the unique "Ellington" sound that found consummate expression in works like "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and the symphonic suites Black, Brown, and Beige (which he subtitled "a Tone Parallel to the History of the Negro in America") and Harlem ("a Tone Parallel to Harlem"). Beginning keyboard studies at the age of seven, Ellington's earliest influences were the ragtime pianists. He taught himself harmony at the piano and at 17, made his professional debut. Encouraged by Fats Waller, he moved to New York in 1923 and, during the formative Cotton Club years, experimented with and developed the style that would quickly bring him worldwide success and recognition. Ellington would be among the first to focus on musical form and composition in jazz using ternary forms and "call-and-response" techniques in works like Concerto for Cootie (known in its familiar vocal version as Do Nothin' till You Hear from Me ) and Cotton Tail and classic symphonic devices in his orchestral suites. In this respect, he would influence the likes of Monk, Mingus, and Evans.

Matt Receives Young Jazz Composer award at ASCAP's "Jazz Wall" event June 22, 2005 Matt recently submitted one of his original compositions, “The Wild Rose”, to ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composer competition for 2005. For those of you who don’t know, ASCAP is the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. It is one of the two largest music societies for musicians and publishers. The other is BMI. Matt was notified in December that he was one of the winners of the competition and he received an award check. He was also invited to NY (Manhattan) to receive an award at The Jazz Wall Event. This is an annual jazz celebration of the great legends of jazz and the celebration of the young up-and-coming jazz musicians. The reception, award announcements and induction takes place at the ASCAP New York City offices. There is a room there (their lunchroom, interesting enough) with a huge wall mural/photograph of legendary jazz musicians. Overlaid on the mural are the names of legendary jazz musicians, both living and deceased… people such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Thelonius Monk, Quincy Jones, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, the list goes on and on. These legends have been inducted over the years to have their names inscribed on the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame. It was a great experience for both Matt and me. We had the opportunity to meet and talk with some legends in the jazz world and befriend some fellow up-and-comers…
