Most of these tunes - you can listen to the MP3 sample links under each title - were composed between 1990 and now, as repertoire for my group The Merlin Factor If you have questions or require a chart, you can reach me at tamatina@interlog.com Some of the MP3 tracks are only demos, reluctantly included in the absence of anything else; at least it allows you to hear the phrasing etc. I hope you enjoy these songs, and that they can someday be heard by a larger audience. New Theory
The 8-Tone Quarto-Modes Concept
by G. F. Mlely Synopsis
The 8-Tone Quarto-Modes Concept is a special study into the diminished and its application for mainstream jazz players, advanced improvisators, and notational composers.  Ten years in development, and written by an internationally acclaimed musician for musicians already familiar with standard scaletone harmony, it is a new paradigm for further possibilities in jazz and improvisational music.  The primary focus of the work is upon a newly-named chord, the diminished-major , symbolized as oM which has current history in modern and mainstream jazz practice, as well as in classical music theory, but which has not, up to now, been so uniquely identified.  The chord and its symbol are based upon solid music theory - diminished scaletone notes set to chords in a form suitable for the work of both the improvisator as well as the notational composer.
To Exhibits
Clearly presented in a graduated approach, the book's method steps carefully from familiar mainstream conventions into more advanced concepts of pandiatonicism - shifting tonal centers - by way of a new chord and its symbol.  (For additional examples of spelling and application of the

June 14, 2004 While enjoying the numerous musical events Santa Fe has to offer this summer, don't forget to take advantage of the abundant, diverse offerings of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Kicking off its 32nd season with a gala concert July 19, the two-month festival brings together more than 80 artists from around the world for more than 40 concerts in multiple venues.
Chamber music is defined as music intended to be performed by a small ensemble, usually without a conductor. In the days of drawing-room concerts, these small performing groups could usually fit in a large room, giving the form its name. There is no shortage of chamber music available; many composers of many different times and styles have composed music for such ensembles.
The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival shows great diversity in both its performers and repertoire, featuring well-known classics, modern composers, jazz and world music. This year's festival will feature three specially commissioned works, including a string and piano quintet by artistic director Marc Neikrug. In addition to the wide variety of musical offerings, there will also be a mini film festival with the musical documentaries of and live commentary by Christopher Nupen.

Background material, photograph, and selected discography from the Europe jazz Network.

Europe Jazz Network
MUSICIANS INSTANT COMPOSER'S POOL ORCHESTRA
"As much as any group anywhere, ICP encompasses a full range of modern musics: Ellington and Monk, Kurt Weill and European dance band music of a lost age, lacy Webern – y chamber music, South African kwela, free improvisation, conducted improvisation, interactive games, counterpoint and simultaneity, catchy melodies, pastel harmonies, order and built – in chaos. Post modern composers like to jump cut from one style to another: think Zorn. ICP’s music drifts from one locus to another like the action in a dream, where the guiding intelligence may thwart rational progress. Some compositions feature glaring wrong notes or brazenly dumb ideas; no piece exists in a definitive state. Players have the option of making some will fully idiotic melody sound better or even worse. From one performance to the next, a piece may sound radically different." ICP’s mix is perplexing in the best sense: the music doesn’t give up its secrets on first hearing, or second, or third. It keeps you coming back. This is jazz / improvised music at its most deft and sophisticated. The musicians treat it with the reverence usually reserved for a chewed – up slipper." From New Dutch Swing by Kevin Whitehead (Billboard Books, 1998)

Jazz message board: leave your comments Like most major musical genres, it's all but impossible to sum up jazz in a single paragraph. By the late 19th century, what had started as the call-and-response songs of the African slave population had turned into blues. The style progressed further in the early part of the 20th century, giving us Ragtime and Dixieland, before making its way up the Mississippi from New Orleans to Chicago. There, Big Band and Swing took hold in the '30s and '40s, taking jazz's complexity and maturity to new heights and extending its popularity beyond its original predominantly African-American audiences. Soon bebop emerged, championed by one of jazz's most renowned geniuses, saxophonist Charlie Parker , signalling the genre's coming of age as more than just a regional folk music. In the late '40s and '50s, Miles Davis and others took jazz further with modal and "cool" jazz, inspiring players like

20th Century Composers message board: leave your comments The composers in this section all composed their music during the last century. Some of them are still composing today. Seems simple enough. But over the last 100 years, ideological changes and technical advances have affected not only the way that music is enjoyed but also the way that it is composed. These composers have all explored new and uncharted territory in terms of tone and structure, often abandoning or combining preconceived notions about the nature of classical music. Schoenberg developed the equally weighted twelve-tone scale, which abolished previously held ideas about tone. Debussy and Ravel experimented with Impressionism, which further destroyed traditional tonality. Gershwin incorporated elements of jazz into his wildly popular music. Cage's aleatoric compositions were based on chance ambient sounds. These composers combined instruments in unheard-of ways and wrote parts for familiar instruments, like the piano, to be played with entirely different techniques. Then, the invention of electronic instruments opened the door for even greater sonic exploration.
