and Jovino Santos Neto offers a uniquely contemporary and universal musical language that abandons all common artificial industry boundaries between Brazilian, Jazz, Classical and other evolving traditions. Their work is marked by an organic synergy of primary Brazilian genres and polyrhythms including samba, bai‹o, maracatu, choro and frevo ; rich and daring Jazz harmonies and improvisations; extended compositional structures driven by Classical contrapuntal textures and motivic development. Such fertile crossroads allow Boukas and Santos Neto to explore a broad musical horizon while maintaining the stylistic integrity and clarity of a workÕs primary component influences. Performances feature their own award-winning compositions and those of legendary Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal , with whom Jovino was pianist/co-producer from 1977-92. To date he remains PascoalÕs official musical archivist, editor and tireless advocate.

David Rogers (composer, saxophones, Dagbamba talking drum) is an eclectic and inventive composer in the jazz, new music, theater, and dance circles of New York. His original music draws on his extensive study of the talking drum, xylophone, and one-string fiddle traditions of the Dagbamba and Dagara tribes of northern Ghana, and is unique in its synthesis of these African forms with the instruments, improvisation, and blues inflections of American jazz. His study of African music has come through apprenticeships, living three years in Ghana in the homes of master musicians Abubakari Lunna, Bernard Woma, and Rallio Yiryelleh, studying native drum languages, and performing at traditional festivals and local funerals and celebrations.

About the Artists James Emery Rob Thomas John Lindberg - bass JAMES EMERY Guitarist/Composer James Emery, guitar virtuoso and the composer of over 100 works for a wide variety of formats and instruments, has carved out a distinctive niche in the often deconstructed environment of contemporary music. His sensibility as a musician draws in nearly equal measures on formal notions of structure and technique and a robust willingness to improvise, experiment and follow his musical instincts. Emery has been acclaimed as "one of the world"s finest guitarists and possesses an encyclopedic jazz vocabulary as a technician and composer ...staggering technical virtuosity, remark-able creative spirit..." ( All About Jazz The New York Times wrote "Emery is a fleet guitarist with a personal touch and sound...mercurial, poised and thoroughly satisfying." The German magazine Stereo lauded Emery"s compositional skills, observing "the guitarist succeeds in something astonishing: shaping modernistic sound dimensions in an extraordinarily delightful way and making them accessible to a wider audience..."

Mark Lomax, II was born in Blacksburg, Virginia and showed early signs of his musical gifts. He started playing the drums at the age of 2 after his family relocated to Columbus, Ohio where he would play in churches from the age of 6. Having been called to the music ministry, Lomax has made it a point to express his heritage and spirituality through the music of jazz in the traditions of John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Ornette Coleman.
Informal study started with his mother, Cynthia Gowens who, herself, is an accomplished composer of gospel music suitable for young ages. She not only exposed Mark to a great deal of music of the religious sect, but also to jazz at an early age. Lomax next studied composition, arranging, and music ministry formally with Raymond Wise, an accomplished pianist, composer, and founder of the Center for the Gospel Arts where Mark now teaches.

Based in Baltimore, bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists world-wide to focus exclusively on use of the bass clarinet as a primary soloing instrument. Making the switch from the more common soprano clarinet in 1997, he subsequently developed a unique tone and angular improvisational style which currently mark his playing. As a composer, Todd Marcus has focused on presenting his compositions in the larger ensemble context of the Todd Marcus Jazz Ensemble which allows for extensive arrangements as well as individual soloing. His straight-ahead jazz arrangements capture a broad range of moods by incorporating jazz with different types of music ranging from classical, to hip-hop, to middle-eastern themes. Theljon James Allen - trumpet A native of Baltimore, Theljon James Allen began playing trumpet at the age of 12 and attended the Baltimore School for the Arts and Randallstown High School.
