In the early 1970s Anderson had composed graphic scores (Music for Charlemagne Palestine), text-sound pieces (Torero Piece) and tape works (Tulip Clause). In the late 1970s, partly influenced by dance and in keeping with a widespread trend, her music became more regular in rhythm, more popular in orientation, and overtly romantic.

Béla Bartók , (1881-1945) was renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. Bartok’s music was heavily influenced by the folk music of his native Hungary, which he collected and transcribed. Contrasts (1938) was commissioned by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman and is dedicated to Goodman and Bartók’s countryman violinist, Josef Szigeti. Elaine Bearer has often been called a "Renaissance Woman" because of her diverse interests and accomplishments. She is internationally recognized as both a composer of serious music and as a scientist. She studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and has a Bachelor of Music from The Manhattan School of Music and Master of Music from NYU. She also holds a MD-PhD and is a licensed board-certified physician. At Brown, she is an Associate Professor in both Pathology and in Music. Bearer has had three premiers of new musical compositions, in addition to this one, in the last four months. A CD of Bearer's music, Bearer of Music (Albany Records) can be obtained through amazon.com. Before coming to Brown, Bearer was on the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Among the awards she has received are grants from Meet the Composer, the Jaffe Foundation, the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. John Cage (1912-1993) has “had a greater impact on world music than any other American composer of the 20th century,” according to the New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

    David Baldwin is professor of trumpet and coordinator of brass instruments at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis. He conducts the Un i versity Brass Choir, an 18-member ensemble which has several recordings to its credit. He is an active soloist, ensemble playe r, composer, arranger and teacher. He has over 100 arrangements and compositions published by G. Schirmer, Shawnee Press, Theodore Presser and others. Baldwin also serves as leader of the Summit Hill Br a s s Quintet.     A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Thomas Drake joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1987 as assistant principal trumpet. Prior to accepting this position, Drake was principal trumpet of the North Carolina Symphony from 1985 to 1987. Drake began his professional career as fourth trumpet with the Rochester Philharmonic after winning that position as a sophomore at the Eastman School of Music in 1976. In addition to his duties with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Drake is principal trumpet of the American Kanterai in St. Louis.

    Best Big Band in the British Jazz Awards ('92, '94, '97 and '99) As well as gracing Radio 2's Monday night listeners with its presence, the BBC Big Band reaches worldwide audiences through the BBC World Service, satellite radio and via the Internet. The BBC Big Band has played with Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, Michael Ball, Martin Taylor, Pat Kane and Helen Shapiro. It's also entertained thousands with international stars such as Tony Bennett, George Shearing, Michel Legrand, Louie Bellson, Lalo Schifrin, Ray Charles and Dr. John. Concert tours with these artists have taken the band all over the world. The Band regularly features on the festival circuit - from Harrogate and Cheltenham to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cork and the London Jazz Festival. At the Proms the band has played with guests Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Clark Terry and Wayne Marshall. The year 2000 saw the Band in Belfast with George Benson for BBC Music Live and at the South Bank's Rhythm Sticks Festival with Billy Cobham and Ed Thigpen.     Conductor, Composer, Woodwinds, Artistic Director Walter Thompson is founder of, and composer/conductor for, The Walter Thompson Orchestra. He has been a professional composer and music educator for the past 30 years, performing, conducting, and teaching worldwide. Walter is the developer of Soundpainting, the unique conducting/composing language comprising more than 700 gestures for performers working in the medium of structured improvisation.
    Todd Reynolds Todd Reynolds is a member of Steve Reich and Musicians, Bang on a Can, the Betty Buckley Band, and Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project . He has developed Still Life With Microphone , a multidisciplinary concert event driven by Soundpainting, now in its third incarnation after a successful run at Gale Gates. He recently received an American Composers Forum grant in support of this work. Todd has been a member of The Walter Thompson Orchestra since 1996.

    Bassist Joshua Levine performs regularly at the Cotton Club with the Cotton Club All-Stars, a 13 piece big band.He also co-directs a vocal and instrumental ensemble, called Los Acustilocos, that performs original music and folkloric music of the Americas.Joshua has performed with Los Acustilocos in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park, St. Paul's Chapel at Trinity Church,Columbia University,Bard College, Galapagos in Williamsburg and Lola's on Martha's Vineyard. After graduating from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music with dual bachelor's degrees in Biology and Jazz Double Bass Performance, Joshua returned home to Manhattan's Upper WestSide.     Emilio Teubal (piano) and Sergio Reyes (violin) joined forces in the summer of 2000. Their repertoire, which at first focused on Argentine tango, has expanded to Jazz, Brazilian, Cuban and other musical traditions from Latin America. On stage they have appeared next to world-famous opera singer Frederica von Stade, tango artists Tito Castro, Pancho Navarro and bandoneononist Hector del Curto. Recently, they performed at the Consulate of Argentina, the Lotus Club and St. Malachy's Church in Midtown.
